so we have a network setup as follows:
2 x Master Octane Standalone/Maya 2015 + Octane plugin
Slave 1 = Octane Standalone
Slave 2 = Octane Standalone
Slave 3 = Octane Standalone
Slave 4 = Octane Standalone
Additional Workstation Computers with Octane/Maya
Currently the artist has to physically walk to the Master computer (or remote) and open up the scene on that computer, checkmark the slaves he wants to use, save the scene, close Maya, Render from batch or use Deadline to schedule the job on the same Octane Master (which is a Deadline Slave).
While setting this up I've tested multiple setups and have found that Octane lacks the abbility to more easily assign a Slave to a Master.
Scripting it doesn't seem to work.
Scenario I would like to see working (This does not currently work this way unless we missed something):
- Master Render gets initiated on Octane master
- Slaves can be added by starting them with the command line/batch script and telling them to connect to the Octane Master on IP adress xxx.xxx.xxx.x
The Documentation on how exactly this works lacks lots of information on this subject.
For example it says the following:
This does not happen as the Maya plugin did not have the slave checkmarked when initiating the render."If you are currently rendering an image, the render data will be automatically sent to the new slave and it starts contributing to the image."
The Slave was started with the command to force it to connect to the Master that was rendering.
Also the way the Maya plugin seems to work (by clicking the Slaves, saving, closing maya etc) is very unmanagable when you want to use this setup in a Render managed environement.
It would be preferable to be able to tell the slave which master to use instead of the other way around. Or at least have both options.
That way we can assign and reasign salves as we please while the render was already running on the network.
Unless I am doing something wrong, this is something we could use a bit of extra info/help on, if anybody has tips
