I am trying to use the openSubdiv feature, but it seems to have no effect. I can only get smooth geo if I actually smooth the geo. I have a heavy scene and would like to have it happen at render time. Is it working in maya for anyone?

thanks,
Dale

Right above where you set the octane level (how much smoothing) you need to set the geo to something other than the default, like movable proxy, for instance.

thank you. That fixed it.

so does that mean if you want to use open subdiv, you will have to reload the geo each frame?

thanks,

It's actually the opposite - movable proxy allows you to cache the geo in memory and the other proxy settings allow different levels of deformable geo to be cached.

Wrong.
Just read the manual mesh types section carefully.

Of course Jim's right. The main thing is that moving things around in the IPR and using the built-in Octane OpenSubDiv requires you to select one of those geometry types rather than the default. I defer to the manual and Jim for how it really works under the hood.
