I also look forward to being able to use a combination of sunlight and HDRI environments
You can do this already. Attach a HDR image (via an Image node with gamma set to 1) to the Sky Texture pins of the Daylight node.

Great, thanks Paul,
I wasn't aware of that !

Sorry to ask for more, but advice on the following would also be much appreciated:

What's the best way of adding cast shadows to the hdri scene, short of photoshopping them in ?
Is there any way of creating a floor that's not visible but still receives shadows ?
In Cinema 4D, it's possible to set '(not) seen by camera' , '(not) seen by rays', is there something like that in Octane/Rhino ?

Lastly, what's the best way of creating a visible light glow, from something like a blackbody emission object ?

Many thanks, Ben

Make the ground prop a diffuse material and turn on Matte (enable it). This will create shadows on the hdri
Or you can add your own prop and apply the same material
