pcie slot config

Hi
I'm building a workstation for use with octane render from a hp z800 but I have a problem with space! I bought a gtx 780 6gb ichill not realising it takes up 3 slots! This leaves me with very little room for a second card to help out in octane and run graphics. I managed to get a single slot gtx 750ti razor to save some space but if I put that in the recommended slot 2(16x)(graphics)) I can only put my 780 in slot 4 (8x) instead on the other recommended slot 5(16x) so the question is will this affect performance?? Would I be better off switching the cards around?

I'm building a second open air rig as the render farm but this will be where I do my work.

Rendering speed - no difference. Uploading geometry - there is (if you are not doing tons of animations it does not matter that much). For a multi gpu setup there are few motherboards that can handle 4 gpus in x16 setup
