I just purchased Octane Render for Carrara. Well, can't say I'm happy with it so far :-(

At first I had a pb similar to this one: http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=45410

As soon as I moved the mouse pointer over the ORVP (the generated image, to be precise) it crashed (both octane and carrara), even with empty scenes.

That has been solved by checking "Use priority" and "Auto Start Render", as Sighman suggested in the topic I mentionned (and I suppose by the 2.17.0068 version).

Now it works ... for simple scenes. For example, in the file scenes supplied with Carrara, "indoor\Afternoon.car" works fine, whereas "misc\HowiesSnowScene.car" don't work.

I load the scene, launch the ORVP, and it freezes immediately: the menu bar inaccessible, at the bottom it's stucked on "Compiling mesh...", the counters (Textures, Triangles, Displacement, Hairs, Meshes) are all stucked at 0, and a few seconds later the OS says it is not responding. If I cancel the msg and wait a few minutes, it responds again (still nothing displayed, all counters still at 0) but the menu bar is accessible again.

In the log there is that:
[17:24:49.203] ERROR : CUDA error 1 on device 0: One or more of the parameters passed were not within an acceptable range of values.
[17:24:49.204] ERROR : -> failed to bind texture to device memory (data2)
[17:24:49.204] ERROR : device 0: failed to bind data texture 1 of context 0

[17:24:49.488] Render Failure Callback
[17:24:49.688] Render Failure Callback
[17:24:49.888] etc ...

I rebooted the computer many times, re-downloaded and re-installing both the standalone and the plugin, uninstalled standalone 2.17 and installed 2.16 instead (and also 2.06, and 2.21.1), deactivated the anti-virus (including during the install). Nothing worked.

I'm all the more disappointed that with OctaneRender_demo_2_06_win64 it worked perfectly with this configuration (see below). I tried various scenes including heavy ones. Besides a few shaders not rendering correctly and carrara hair and fire not rendered at all (which, as I understood, is normal), I had no problem.

Any suggestions ?

You have run into the 'tree' problem that is typical with most Howie scenes. The trees in the snow scene are just too complex for Octane. A single tree is fine but when you replicate them you run out of memory. I'll post a tutorial on what I did to get that scene to load later today. The bottom line is that you need to decimate the snow covered leaves and flatten the trees.

Please see this topic for editing the Snow Scene to fit in Octane...

Wow. Thank you for responding so quickly, and for such a detailed answer.

I tried what you explained in the link. It worked perfectly, and the first results look splendid.

Thanks again !
