Why isn't region rendering faster than a full render?
Is there a special setting I should be aware of?
EDIT: On a related note - a 100% size render takes 44 seconds, but a 29% size takes 32 seconds. Shouldn't the latter be much faster, like 14 seconds?
Region render takes the same time as a full render...

no, size is not going to define render time, as some areas are more complex to calculate than others =)

Thanks, glimpse - but how about region rendering? Isn't that supposed to be faster? I mean, isn't that the point?

It is faster.. But it's not like 50% of area will render twice as fast as 100%..

I just tried again, using Ctrl B to select less than 10% of the object - isn't that the right way?
It took about 50 seconds to render. A full render took 46 seconds...

Glimpse, are you sure Region Render even works in the Blender version?glimpse wrote:It is faster.. But it's not like 50% of area will render twice as fast as 100%..
If so, how is it used? As far as I can see, it isn't mentioned anywhere.
I'm not referring to Blender's old region render (like I said, it doesn't work in the Octane version).
Octane region render should look something like this:

Hi justavisitor,
Select the region in camera view with Shift+B. I've just tried it and it works fine both in preview and final rendering. Although Ms/sec seem to tell otherwise, region actually denoises faster than full render - at least on a simple cube scene.
Best,
Szymon
Edit : Ctrl+B seems to do the same thing as Shift+B, I didn't know that before:)

Hi kubicki3d, thank you for your reply!
It only works in the sense that it does render a small, isolated region.
The problem is that it takes longer time to render that small region than to do a full render, thus defying the very purpose of the feature.
Octane region render seems very different according to the video (please see the YouTube link in my previous post): Not only is it considerably faster, it also allows you to actually see your last full render simultaneously which would be very useful.

That's interesting - in my case, with just a cube in the scene, full F12 render takes 12 sec. and a +/-50% region takes 9 sec. with the same settings.justavisitor wrote:The problem is that it takes longer time to render that small region than to do a full render
Justavisitor, what versions of Blender Octane Edition and Octane Server are you using?
Is region slower for both preview and F12 rendering?
Yes, region works really nice in Standalone, but in Blender, I think that for now it's not possible to render region and still see the rest of the frame.
