Paul, I often use simple planes with images mapped to the to create reflections in my automotive paints. I use a plain with texture and set the material to a 0 diffuse and 0 specular but a 1 luminous. Then I set the mapped image to be a luminous color and not a diffuse color. This will make the plane invisible to the camera but shows up in the reflections of all objects.

Basically need to make objects only affect the reflections of another object and not be visible to the camera?

Hi Carter - tick the emitter plane Mesh "Live Geometry Update" and untick "Camera Visibility".
