OTOY pleas answer!!!!
I just want to say I do agree with Your points, especially with last one:
Just to say hi, and as you all know i too think this is too much time without our Fuzzy. He is great and that might be the problem. I'm here since the beginning of the plugin, and in 2 month he put Octane4SU in a place where no other rendering engine (inside SU) imagine to achieve. Lots of bugs lots of frustration sometimes but the plugin is great...sadly its not at 100%
Im with Seeker...no fault to Fuzzy...he really did a great job in a short time Otoy gave to him, but many times this happens, something that is so good start to be dangerous to other major software's, especially expensive ones. If we combine the price of SU Pro + Octane and think what can be done inside SU (not even saying what can be done in StandALone) its really a great deal.
Of course we have Octane 2.16 in SU, but not the real Octane 2.16 because many features from the Kernels are missing (GI Clamp, Coherent...etc etc) and all other features that are in the roadmap. So the option is export to StandAlone to render final images....but Glimpse have you ever opened a exported Octane4SU file??...lol
...its hell on wheels Just impossible to work...ou just can edit render target/camera/kernels/etc...because there are a million nodes and you cannot navigate in a node system like that.
This simple example the Geometry group has 346 inputs, and to each input there are 3 or 4 more nodes.....
zoom out out
zoom out even more...Display just starts to lag lag and if you want to find a node its almost impossible
But there is a reason to that....memory usage in this plugin is great, all geometry is scattered...really great but then the Standalone file is not usable.
Glimpse you know that SU is more then just a box modeling tool.
And you said something that I don't agree, but is just my opinion...well I'm an architect so a big part of my job is to explain to a client an idea, there are many tools to do that...speech, drawings, technical drawings, physical 3d models, etc, etc, virtual 3d model, and simulation of the end result (rendered images/video).
Client don't build houses just looking at drawings, the same way when someone's want a car they look at different models, magazines, photos, etc...the same happens to buildings. So SU and Octane(or other rendering engine) are tools that can (and are increasing)be used in every part of a project...since the initial idea (volumes/shapes) do the technical information in the construction process, and to the minimal detail of the client taste in the decoration of his house/building.
So imho its a massive product...that can be used to CG & visualization level, its just a question of knowledge of the artist.
As someone smarter than me said....its not the brush that make the artist, but what the artist makes with the brush.
That artist can be an architect, a designer, a engineer...etc etc etc.
The big point to me is that Octane4Sketchup is really dangerous to big CG companies/artist because of what can achieve. Without render, SU stiles/shadows are by far the best real time 3d visualization tool for architecture that I know. When we join the Octane viewport we just blow away the competition.
The same as Blender (that is the best price/produce combination with Octane), that can do almost, or everything, that others BIG paid software's do all together. But is harder to learn, and not as simple to show to clients without render the visualization 3D model is not so attractive.
Blender is my 2nd choice, and no other 3d software fill my needs, especially because the price is unaffordable to Portugal economy.
If Fuzzy read this post, please give us the kernel features from Octane 2.21 and we be silent for a few months
Hope you are all great
and best of luck in your work.
cheers

Three years ago when I started my journey with Sketchup and discovered how it beautifully works with Octane I was amazed of its simplicity and hidden power behind thousands of plugins. And let me stress is - I still find SU unmatched in certain areas where 3Ds Max or Modo (that's what I tried so far) are clunky. I still use SU for base works and refine models in Modo. We're all know that for animation, texturing, (turbo)smoothing/subD SU is not among the best. That is what Glimpse meant, and I understand him. But SU overall power is undeniable, especially for those who know SU really well. SU is a jewel priced reasonably well compared to max and its brutal pricing strategy for updates. Modo costs 1/4 of max and beats it in many areas. Zbrush is a class for itself for less than 800$...
I don't want it to sound supercilious but here on this forum I was devoted as best as I could to any additional feature that would make Octane and SU a perfect pair. TIG's exporter had been improved many times as I reported any wish or bug; the idea of scatter nodes exporter (again great thanks to TIG) is still alive. Look at PhantomScatter - it all started here in SU section.
Guys, I still feel strong positive attitude to SU and Octane but my choice of Modo is not SU itself but the communication from Otoy side to Us - SU users.
I came up with an idea 'of the perfect exporter' here
http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic. ... t+exporter
but it's dead. We would have great ordered exported to Standalone system of nodes; no more mess.
I asked for nodal system for materials, identical to Standalone - nothing.
I reported months ago critical bugs in some great SU plugins - no response.
As for one of the above voices - how come that Paul takes part in development of many plugins and he responds to any of our needs immediately and here we don't even hear 'Hello'?
Why OTOY doesn't hire TIG, tom-tom (Thomas Thomassen), Fredo, Chris Fullmer,... there are many great SU coders out there that would be happy to give us great plugin.
Why SU plugin is not properly advertised on Sketchucation community? More than 30 millions people had been using SU as of 2012 before Trimble took it. Isn't such audience worth greater attention?
I am truly sad what is going in SU subforum, but still happy that I know how to combine SU and Modo.

This is so 'to the point' an had been exactly the reasons why to this day I still have not been able to incorporate the SUplugin to my professional workflow (* I have bought the plugin since it came out and have try very, very hard to make it work but failed.)smicha wrote: Guys, I still feel strong positive attitude to SU and Octane but my choice of Modo is not SU itself but the communication from Otoy side to Us - SU users.

Yes, there were updates in the past but I feel like the most important issues (nodes, UI, export...) had never been addressed
To this day I am still using TIG's exporter for all my professional work, yes it takes a long time to export for larger models but hey it gets the job done
Hi all,
We'll provide an update on SU plug-in roadmap this week.
Like last year, things can get quiet on the forums when the devs are heads down in preparation for GTC.

Thank you all for your great comments to this post.
We are in general very happy with what OCTANE have done for our work and workflow together with SU, in what ever way we are using it.
We have all paid for the plugins and standalone software. When version 3.0 come out most of us will support and pay for the new version and in return get a better software in many aspects. And therefore we also expect support from OTOY. So when we ask a simple question about the road map and details for octane for SU, we expect to get it right away.
It is only fair for us to get an idea what OTOY's plan is for octane for SU. So we know what to expect. We are professionals that are depended on the software and for some even a big part of the income is from using the software. If the development of the software stops, we might re-think what we will do in the future to stay ahead and in the game of our industry.
Here attached a work in progress (very start of it) interior shot. This will be used to show case furniture products on a online furniture shop. This help us sell more products and save money for expensive photo studio. This is possible to do very realistic because of SU and octane.
Octane inside SU2015, Path Tracing, 500 samples, about 5 min.

+1 to the all comments above. Thank you for the update Goldorak. Lets wait this great plugin to shine!
I was thinking it would be nice if there was a way to "link" a scene with the standalone, in real time. Something like a realtime exporter. It could work for all the plugins and not SU only and it could save time from replicating the standalone interface for different applications. It would require to have both programs open, modeling and standalone and when something changes, the standalone scene updates. I know it must be technically impossible but it could be an all in one solution, and all users could use the great standalone interface, with the latest version too. Daydreaming! - I also believe some users don't like the standalone and want to stay in the safety of their modeling software

hello otoy,
i'm an architect and a specialist for cad, cg and 3d-architecture visualizing. i'm teaching engineers and architects in 3d visualizing tools for about 25 Years on academic level.
I'm familiar with the most important cad, cg and Modelling Software, because i teach them on a high level.
I'm using Sketchup as well, for small project's with a small timeslot.
I've bought your tools (sketchup and standalone). i only worried, at this time, if otoy will be professional enough to support their community. I'm prooved right so far.
What you are doing now (or better what you are doing not) is not in a professional way.
You are far behind the standards of the cg-industry support.
i'm heading off from your product, telling all my trainees, to be aware!
Best luck for your future as a company.
