As thd said, it's the textures that take up memory. These take up an extra bit, as they add onother map to control the SSS. BUT! Remember that very often you don't need those huge maps. Resize all of mine to 1/4 or 1/2 and only use the full size if nessecary. This can easily be done withing the plugin.
Look at the image I posted. It's 800 pixels tall. To me it makes no sense to use eye textures of 4000x4000 when the eye ends up being 50 pixels tall! Using maps intelligently will let you get a lot of milage out of a normal GPU
