Im specialising in doing stills. Im a compositor working in cgi animated films but as I will leave this market I would like to jump in the field of photorealistic stills(advertising?).
This two studios are the best examples of what I want to be:
http://www.lightfarmstudios.com/
http://www.christophehuet.com/#/ALL
I THINK that the best alternatives are:
- c4d: basically, this is the platform that receives all the stuff and render it. Of course for hard surface modeling, texturing, lighting etc..
- zbrush: the only real choice for sculpt.
- mari: the best tool for texturing, also the one with brightest future.(maybe its too much? maybe can do this in ps?)
- octane: because, its fast, photorealistic and easy to use.
- photoshop: Maybe the most important of all. As compositor I can boost the quality of the image in this stage (compared to my knowledge in modeling/texturing).
WHAT I miss?
-more vfx stuff... c4d lacks a lot in that field. Xparticles is not so "pro" compared to pflow for example. Turbulence is not Fumefx. Nitroblast is not Rayfire etc..
-decent scatter tool: I have carbon scatter 2 for c4d but its not very stable. Replicators in Modo are sooo cool.
-c4d nodal texturing, decent uvs.
SO the big thing out there is Maya, with lot of features and 3rd party implementations that are soo cool like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... AWPE-4Eb8s
Also Modo is nice, but outside from model, uv and retopo its very convoluted. I prefer c4d.
THEN maybe the best and smarter alternative is Maya+arnold/octane/vray3. But maybe Maya is too overwhelming for the things I want to do. Maybe c4d/octane are enough solution...
