Unfortunately it's not, but I really count on this feature.

It's not ideal, I know, but is there an option to convert the Xgen to curves and then use nhair?

i looked into this before too :( are you using it for it's scatter functions or fur? If you're looking for scatter functionality, Carbon Scatter is supposed to update the plugin for maya very soon (i was told it should be out this week, but i'll take that with a grain of salt, as they haven't been 100% on point with meeting their release dates).

The update 2015.1 will unlock the ability to convert instances to geo in maya which will then work with Octane or any other renderer you need. I've played with it quickly and it seems VERY capable when it comes to scatter. Also, the price is very affordable. So if scattering is what you need, give it a look too.

ok but its a bit of waste that having the powerful xgen we have to use an external plugin.

I agree, I'd love to be able to use Xgen with Octane. I just wouldn't hold my breath for Xgen and Octane compatibility anytime soon in Maya. From what it seems like to me, it's more in the hands of Xgen than Octane for compatibility. These instancing programs just don't seem to work with raytracers in general unless the program itself has a built in feature that convert the instances to polys.

just a suggestion for an alternative was all. 8-)

Works in V-Ray also, but they only implemented XGen support recently (v3 of the Maya plugin).
