"Jan 15, 2010 Ptex is released as free open source by Walt Disney animation studios"

http://ptex.us/index.html

See it in action
(thanks solo)
CGdigg.com
Ptex, the texture mapping system developed by Walt Disney Animation Studios for production-quality rendering is now released as free open source.

- No UV assignment is required! Ptex applies a separate texture to each face of a subdivision or polygon mesh.
- The Ptex file format can efficiently store hundreds of thousands of texture images in a single file.
- The Ptex API provides cached file I/O and high-quality filtering - everything that is needed to easily add Ptex support to a production-quality renderer or texture authoring application.
Its already built in RenderMan Pro Server V15.0.
Ptex was used for all textures in the Disney movie "Bolt"
Its now the primary texture mapping method for all productions at Walt Disney Animation Studios

The interesting part is of course the samples page
http://ptex.us/samples.html

Each sample includes an OBJ, a rib file, some renderman materials, and one or more ptex textures.

The question is "is that related or usefull for Octane ?"
I wish I had an answer  but I think we'll see in 2-3 years when Pixar (and Renderman) gonna look at GPU computing more closely.
All that tech stuff make me drools  (but not as much as Octane ;))

(ps: Im not working for Walt Disney hehe how sad)
Be warned that in the PTEX open source license you can read
The names "Disney", "Walt Disney Pictures", "Walt Disney Animation Studios"
or the names of its contributors may NOT be used to endorse or promote products
derived from this software without specific prior written permission from Walt Disney Pictures.

If so, you should try 3DCoat, the uvw unwrap tool there is dead easy ;)

Cant wait for Zbrush and other 3Dpainting apps to support this :)

Radiance, you should take a look at supporting this format if it makes any sence to use it in Octane. My guess is that it will be widely used in not so long time ;)

Im just quoting users from this CGTALK THREAD but its very interesting:
aghill
So basicly the only downside (if that really is a downside) is that you cant use Photoshop or other 2D-paint solutions to tweak your textures.

soulburn3d
Well, there's nothing stopping adobe from adding support to photoshop to allow the editing of ptex, but it would probably require some big changes under the hood, and I doubt adobe will go to that effort for such a small portion of its user base.

Lucentdreams
its only useful if you also have a renderer that can utilize it. How many 3D coat users are using PRman? Even another renderman compliant renderer wont' be of use anytime soon as only Prman officialy supports Ptex at the moment, so you have to wait on two fronts
Now quoting 3D coat creator and admin Andrew Shpagin (view thread here)
Ptex is very close to microvertex painting. So I think I will do it. Yes, seams problem is not too easy, but it could be solved too.
Possibly Ptex support will be done as additional plugin and possibly not for free because this technology is too unique and far not everyone needs it.
So 3D coat gonna be the first painting app supporting PTEX format.
And renderman is the only *current* beside other PRMAN renderers that support PTEX.
That would be a cool move to look for PTEX basic implementation for Octane beside RIB format.

OBJ (geometry) - RIB (animation) - PTEX (textures)
(that's some nice open workflow, also good workflow for big to huge animation studios)

CALL ILM, PIXAR, WETA AND DIGITAL DOMAIN AND SEND SOME OCTANE MUGS NOW
(and then rule the world )

(edit: Try to search for "octane" in the 3D Coat forum, there's no result )
