Littlebit philosofy.
We all need to keep in mind that making money is the reward for example to Otoy, to UE4 etc. for making this all happen. I see nothing wrong in that.
Without that reward, no tools. It that simple boys and girls.
Then it falls to the artists to make stuff happen with these tools and artist should also receice their well earned reward.
Greed is not about the amount of money received from a cool cgi production. It´s not in the artists hand nor the tools owners hand, if billion people buys their product with one euro. There would be just one billion euros received. Greed devil is in the sharing of that money: to whom it properly belongs? Thats where the fighting starts always. It is easy to see that these tool owners would be very jelous to the poor artist who accidentaly made billion euros. Ofcourse, we are human beings. So therefore, artists should be on their toes all the time. Rules should be open and predictable. Tool owners They have an army of lawyers, artists usualy have at best their mom and dad..

I don´t know what to vote.
It´s somewhere in the between yes and no.

first of all, CHANGE THE TOPIC! it's plain misleading..
it's only Your thoughts, so make it a question, make it an idea..but not the statement!
(it seems You just need to make a buzz & that's it =)
as on the topic, if You made a pool, I see no problem having rent licences..Let's say:
You have to pay 600EU per year for owning a licence & let's say OTOY makes a move releasing 3rd, 4th, 5th.. upgrade every year (let's just say of the sake of simplicity..) So if You pay like 50EU/month or 600EU/year..it makes no difference..as if You wish to stay with the latest & greatest technology, utilise new hardware..You have to buy these packs every year anyway..
so in the end it's not a bad at all..it's just the industry - when You try to google up for software & warez (cracked versions) come up top of official sites or just bellow =) there's no need to make noise about companies moving towards Rental, or cloud solutions to keep steady income..
so even if, they make this software rental only, I don't see anything - for long time this software been underpriced compared to anything in the industry & as one of developers said "we sometimes need to eat too".
again, change misleading topic, 'cos Your making false waves..
p.s. I know guys who would be happy to rent: let's say You own a studio & work with tons of different packages..but if Your licence sits still for 3-4month till next project, 'cos You're working on realtime or some other way to present..why You would event want to buy licence..when You can rent it on demand? For them this plan would even be cheaper =) so it depends..on what side of the fence You're standing, but because possible scenario doesn't fit Your needs, there's no need to make noise about greed of developers..'cos You probably have too little appreciation how much effort & time takes to develop a project.
Don't wan't to be harsh, just expressed different opinion, to false "fire alarm" =)

Grammar and spellcheck police
Put in your mind there's a question mark.
I think my first post is pretty clear.
Ipisoft went rental only now. I have not read a single hurray about it in their forum.
Messiah went subscription which is dumb move considering how bad its rep is.
Btw the reason I put Adobe pricing is because they offer a lot of software packages for that their sub. its easier to swallow for some people
For Autodesk pricing it could get expensive to keep paying just to use be able to open the software. Some studios don't even upgrade for 3-4 years to stay compatible in a pipeline.
For octane, what do you guys think?

Actually it's not. It would have taken you less time to clarify your post title than to talk about grammar police. Also, the poll isn't clear. What does Adobe and Autodesk have to do with whether or not Octane should be rental only? I could guess, but in a poll, if you have to start guessing before you can answer, you can just throw the poll away right now. If you care about this poll and thread, just take a moment and made it clearer for everyone.geo_n wrote:Grammar and spellcheck police![]()

It would open up some interesting possibilities. For example, what if a subscription came with a few hours monthly of free cloud rendering? Or if there were monthly options, making scaling up for big projects easy.
Also a yearly license subscription should be an annual tax deduction, so there's that.
Personally I like the foundry's 'maintenance' model, where they get annual money to support development if they earn it with quality updates. I'd definitely be willing to do this with octane, as the development has been insanely fast and impressive.
On the other hand, I switched from maya to modo because autodesk's recent software development is nowhere near worthy of an annual monetary commitment IMO.

Because there's only two very known rental scheme that people would be forced to accept to earn a living.riggles wrote:Also, the poll isn't clear. Adobe scheme which is lower bracket, Autodesk scheme is higher price bracket.
So if you'll be paying rental, how much are you willing to pay? Adobe price or Autodesk price or not at all for rental. Yes just means you just accept rental period and don't care of the pricing, limitation, etc.
Its ridiculous what they did with Ipisoft. I would guess not many would pay over 1000usd annually for a retargetting solution? For a renderer like octane, would people pay that much?

Are you affiliate with Octane? Or are you wondering what other people think of rental agreements for software and IF Octane was rental... how would they feel?
There is no Octane 3... it has not become rental...
A survey on an idea is fine but call it what it is!!
Gramar police or not ... if you want an honest response to a survey...
Title should be...
IF OTOY changed their software policy to a rental agreement how would you feel???
(Not affiliated with OTOY)
Then I'd actually fill it out
You may think it is semantics or grammar ... communication is all about semantics and grammar.
