hair wont follow object ( cheetah sample scene)

when I try to animate the fur cheetah sphere, the hair seems to move along my keyframed animation path but the textured sphere itself seems to stay locked in the starting position. Am I missing something here?

hitting crtl R shows both the sphere and hair moving along the set path, but when I render to picture viwer the hair moves along the path by itself leaving the sphere locked in its initial position.

Which render method is active? If you used "Resend only updated objects", you should know that any moved objects need a objecttag.
