The newest version of Octane overheats my computer when it's real hot out, like today.

I'm going to buy a new computer in August.

Can I buy a license today for the sale price but not activate it until August?

Thanks for your reply.

Yup. A lot of people are doing the same thing. Might just need to get some better airflow in your case if it is overheating. It gets pretty hot in my house too, but as long as you have good airflow it is ok.

I was surprised to find out, after my licence purchase, there is an activation limit. I can't remember reading this anywhere upfront. This is devious in my view and a bad way to start a relationship. What I find worse is that there is no mention of how many activations we actually do have.

The email sent by refractive software, following my purchase, makes the following statement:
Please note that you may activate the license a limited number of times, so be carefull which machine you install it on…
How would you interpret this?

you can activate it as much as you want, but there must be a frequency in between.
the point is that one license is per machine, so if you send us 3 activations on one day that means you're installing on 3 machines.
i've clearly said MANY times:

you may install up to 3x (but not all at once), after that we review each application. (which means we determine that users aren't installing the license on multiple machines)

radiance,

I don't have a problem with such policy, if this is what it means, but such is not clear from the way it is currently phrased. Having gone through a similar experience with Adobe, on account of which I have not upgraded since CS3, is it any wonder I thought this? This must be better articulated, in my view.

we're not adobe and we process licenses manually, eg we're not software that takes decisions, so you don't have to worry about anything.
