Excellent evolution of octane, since 1.xx, fast, stable and powerfull with this 2.12: motion blur + noise reduction features particulary appreciated.
Congrats to Octane dev. team and Juan, the Lightwave Plugin developper.
Waiting now for real volumetrics capabilities - do you think that a voxel interpretation from the host apps is possible in near (or far) future ?
thanks for all

just a question probably off-topic:
having purchased a new iMac 5K (it will be shipped in few days), I would like to know if it can be used with Octane standalone in passive mode (because the Ati gpu).
I want to use only my windows gpus through the network.
Is it possible?

now that's an interesting question I was looking too. Also considering that piece as price is a bargain..& if it's possible to run Octane natively & use networked GPU on a slave somewhere in a cellar, that might be awesome. (that 5k screen alone is worth the price - dell is releasing one around december, but they probably ask ~2500$ for screen alone =)gabrielefx wrote:.. the worry I have for using iMAC & networked GPUs, whether that Gigabit Ethernet connections is going to be enough..
another option is to drop a AMD Fire Pro into slave & use GPU accelerated VNC - the question remains whether all FirePros has that functionality =)..

Hi Beppe,
Nope not working after trying 4 to 5 times, still the same issue ;o(
Cheers

weird

i have tried on a fresh Yosemite system and i have got the same behavior, at the first start the error message: then, at the next start, no issue at all, no log message i have also tried to find something in the console.app but without success

damn, another mac headache for Marcus, i think

I think you mentioned that your 5K imac has an ATI card.
My understanding is that the host card needs to be able to voxelize the scene in the ram it has before the slave GPUs can kick in.
So if it is passive mode the slaves wont see it until it is complied and ready to render.
Hope I am wrong. I tried to run trash bin mac with that idea with no success. It saw the slaves but would not render.
I think thunderbolt Extension box might be a solution I know bepeg4d has been doing some testing under Yosemite... any luck mate??

if so, than it's better to avoid this route as eGPU via thunderbolt is still not perfect - & those expanders are at least 1k$..p3taoctane wrote: My understanding is that the host card needs to be able to voxelize the scene in the ram it has before the slave GPUs can kick in.
I mean, Yes it's elegant & I can help myself not to look that way, but..
ghm, curious whether new licensing will allow vGPUs to be utilised - then this iMac affair might be viable! =)

I have mentioned it to Otoy.
They would sell more licenses cause people with macs and PCs could run form their airbooks and such while their PC does the work in a basement etc.
Hope it is something they can enable.

because the lack of Nvidia cards in the new Macintosh will Otoy continue to develop on osx?

I sure hope so. There's still a number of Macs with NVIDIA cards, both desktop and notebooks.gabrielefx wrote:because the lack of Nvidia cards in the new Macintosh will Otoy continue to develop on osx?
My personal preference is that OTOY try developing an OpenCL version again. That way, both AMD and NVIDIA cards on any platform are supported (since NVIDIA supports OpenCL on their cards as well as CUDA).
