Hi guys and girls,
The 4K monitors are getting cheaper and cheaper.
Would it not be great to have a 4K monitor as second or third monitor?
I am working with Archicad plugin on dual screen and I drag the render window to the second screen.
Would be awsome to have 4K screen and be able to see big rendersizes fullscreen on 3840 x 2160 Pixels ?
Does anyone have experience with that?
And does anyone know if something might not work with monitors with different resolution?
Should it be possible to have two regular monitors and add the 4K as third?
cheers,
4K monitor as second or third monitor possible?

hi, Man!
not so long ago =) but long enough -few month =) I've helped/talked my friend into buying one =DDD
He's a concept artist finished FZD - He was working on his gaming oriented laptop, but he had major problem..with colours =) he had a laptop & it was top of the line ASUS with a lot of horse power on CPU & GPU. The problem was that these kind of machines are tuned for games (read: TN panels - fast but terrible with colours..) & he asked some help..He was looking to get new mac screen (that was ageing..) Yes it's beautiful but..we talked a bit & he ended up with 24" DELL UP2414Q & it's insanely good! The main thing for him was colours (as he spend his days in PS). This monitor covers 100% sRGB & 99% AdobeRGB - what is very important if You working not only with web content, but also prepare Your pictures for print. He was & still is very happy it. As for pairing it with other monitors there's no problem as far as You have enough comparable connectors to drive Your screens. if You have let's say, same size, but 1080 monitor nearby, keep in mind then when You try to get Your mouse from 4k to smaller monitor You need to do that around the middle of the screen otherwise Your mouse will be lost =) so this is a bit of tricky side. Other things like scaling of text & so might be issue for some - sometimes it really difficult..but again depends what You're going to use it for.. =) Just remember, after 4k You will not want to get back..every other screen will look just as an iPhone =p

hehe, I like hardware (& that takes much of my time), but as I have that knowledge it's not hard to share a bit of that =) happy to help, but soon I'll spend my time less & less there as I'm thinking to write theme post on my site rather than talking one by one =) so if You start missing me here =) jump back to my site & You'll find some interesting stuff there =)
honestly, 4k is nice, but I'd wait a bit..5K is coming out & that should kick 4K prices a bit..if You pick one, don't go on cheap TN based panels - these are for games, not colour critical work..1K$ is a good amount for 23-24" - bigger model have other issues like the collars start to differ because of uneven lighting, then You need to use some clever software tricks.
Anyway, Once You get ready to buy something, open up google & spend an hour or two to read respectful review sites for issues. Pluss remember to power up 4k You need display port (I think least least 1.2, otherwise You get only 30 hz instead of 60 - new standard will bring even higher resolutions & refresh rates) - so do Your homework as resolution is (like Mpixels in cameras) is the least important aspect of screen =) - Leica's don't have crazy pixel counts, but the glass is second to none + history & here's a price xx xxx $ =DDD

one problem though is that with larger resolution, you need a larger monitor - I have a dell 27" 2550x1440 resolution, and the icons and all tools are equally smaller .. so I tend to get closer to the screen even though the monitor is huge..
- the 4k will make all toolbars much smaller.. I would guess that on a 24" monitor the icons and toolbars will be tiny - you can increase the DPI setting in windows, but it has issues because most software is configured for the default DPI setting..
- this all wouldn't be a problem if operating systems started to pay attention to that problem, and make it easier or more compatible to increase the icons and toolbars with the optimal resolutions..
- I have a (now broken) dell 17" laptop, that has 1920x1200 resolution - I always lean into it when working, and when not working on something important the resoluton is kicked down to a 1200 width or something like that.. since everything is tiny
- and if you want to game on a 4k - the gpus need to be that much faster if you want native resolutions,
also VRAM is going to be used up a bit more..
- so I would say, I'm not sure about 4 or 5k monitors still, would have to test one out before I can say if it's that much better, but judging from all the monitors I got so far, I think it's a bit overhyped so it doesn't bother me, the only thing I would recommend is having two monitors, I cannot work with only one now (which again is a bit annoying when working on a laptop, I get much faster on 2 monitor setups)
- pay attention to the panel type, it doesn't bother me that much when switching from 27" to 24" monitor though

Indeed, I agree with 4k the high res would be even be a drag working with software getting all small icons and text.
I was purely thinking how it would be having a 4k monitor as second monitor, or even third, mainly for the render window (in my case the Archicad plugin render window, which I can drag to my second screen.
That would be awsome... Now often I have to pan the window to see what is happening during rendering, or resize to smaller to see the whole picture, but then I have to start rendering again when setting it to big size.
Most of the times I am rendering about sizes 2400x1600 or about 3000x2250 pixels, and they fit fullscreen on a 4k monitor!.
Right now if I am working on settings, materials, objects and so on I am mostly have a render window about 1200x800,
And I am dragging and resizing the window depending on what I am doing (objects, materials, settings, modelling...)
Having the 4k as third monitor will be heaven.. Having big render window, keep it there and do my thing on the two 'regular' monitors.
Can I just plugin the 4k monitor in my Titan and be able to have this third screen and drag the window to it?
I guess it will, but maybe anyone has good reason to think otherwise?
Cheers,

Hey mate,
have you considered getting a 3440x1440 instead. Like the soon to come AOC U3477PQU or Dell U3415W curved, the LG version of it and so on...
The AOC is to be released here in UK these days for around 550 GBP which is actually a very good price considering what it brings to the table.
The reason I didn't get a 4k monitor so far is that you need a size like 32"-34" to get pixels as big as those on a 27" 2560x1440. And those are really expensive, especially if you want IPS. Most of the stuff they sell is TN at 24" to 28" and the text/icons are just way to small on those things.
Keep in mind- you say you only want it for the render window now but at some point you will want to utilize it for more stuff. And then you will be stuck with something that just won't do it for you.
Just my two cents...
Cheers.

I have the 34UM95, it's a fantastic ips panel with stereo audio and I share it with my Mac Book Pro via thunderbolt.
I never seen a good 4K panel around, the cheap Samsung model is trash.
