Ouch. Octane is a CUDA renderer. Your GPU is like 3 generations too obsolete for Octane - and if memory serves, does not even have one CUDA core. You need a minimum GTX400-series GPU (Fermi) bro. The good news is that you can pick up 500-series cheap(ish - they are somewhat more when Mac compatible) on eBay for couple hundred. Do some homework - but one other tip is that 400 and 500 series cores are 3x more powerful than Kepler (600/700 series), thus you will see Keplers have roughly 3x more cores - so when comparing cores between Fermi and Kepler, divide or multiply x3.

Yank that old dinosaur and get nothing short of at least one GTX580 or better - preferably 3GB or more. If money is of little concern or consequence, just slap a 780Ti or Titan in that mutha.

Support for GPU's with compute capability less that 2.0 (like the 8800 GT) was removed in version 1.21.
You will only be able to use versions 1.20 or less with this card (and then with some limitations). Please see the 1st item of the FAQ here: http://render.otoy.com/faqs.php

(this version might work: http://render.otoy.com/customerdownload ... .6_OSX.zip )

If you do go used havart, please do your homework and compare GPUs in benchmark charts etc. I said 580 or better.. But to the completely uninitiated/clueless, that would just be anything in the 600 series. This is not the case. More times than I care to count, blokes have run out and grabbed 650s, 660s etc... Regardless if you go with 5xx, 6xx or 7xx, you will be doing yourself a disservice by not getting the 80s/90s (580 ..690 etc). A 580 will smoke a 670 in Octane. Good luck in the hunt.

this seems to be the only card I can put in my machine (see attached) will it do the job?

Yes, sorry for your problem. Your GPU is really old, and also really slow, to allow GPU rendering of complex scenes with Octane.

The GTX 680 is really a good GPU for Octane, I have some GTX 670 GPUs here and all are working fine. The Mac I am using to test the plugin has one of them. In fact, if possible, the best solution could be to add the GTX 680 for Octane, and keep your old GPU for the monitor.

Just want to add that you can add any GPU. But you need to make sure you're not picking one that requires more power than the Mac Pro can deliver. This might sound weird, because the Mac Pro have a 980W Power Supply.

I purchased a GTX Titan last year, and the goal was to use it with DaVinci Resolve on my Mac. However, when there were too much CUDA activity (thus requiring more power) the system would shut down completely as a safety procedure.

Luckily I had a GTX 680 4GB in my PC, so I swapped them, and now everything is fine.

The downside of using a regular PC GPU is you won't get boot screen. Except for that, it works like a charm because of the drivers nVidia provides. Not only is it way cheaper to get a PC GPU, they also have more RAM than the Mac version of the GTX 680!

I've heard of other Mac users successfully using GTX 770 and GTX 780 in their systems. But you'd stay clear of the "TI" and x90 versions of any card as they require way more power.

Good luck!
