Hi Chris!
I think that this is insanely spectacular!
I love the miniature feel... let me say that you have a really magic skill with the texturing/rendering process: I'm really curious about the next step!!!
Let me know if I can be of some help

Thanks again! You make my days :)

would put this one on hold for now ,
would probably finish it in teh next version of octane , depending of the feature that would be added ..
if not i would then render the final pictures in good old trusted mental ray . it would take a lot more time , but at least i would get the basic feature that i need to render in pass .. and with mask :-(
( yess .. i am very frustrated right now :-( )

It look pretty darn cool to me. Where is your frustration from?
Is it that you want to have certain spot in the highlight on the face, the gun etc.
that need some fill lights? Or it is other thing you are talking about?

why don't you use the black diffuse and white environment trick for alpha pass ?

already did think about it .. i did also think about a way of doing my mask , as i can now record my camera position trough the maya conection
but still this is not an ideal solution .
would be nice to have a switch on each material ...
i understand the limitation of gpu calculation and the memory issue .. and i do not even think or wishe to render everything in one pass . (as a mask pass by itself would be very quick anyway )

It look pretty darn cool to me
thank you :-)
Where is your frustration from?
well ...
do not get me wrong guys .. i really like octane and do not mind supporting or advertising it .
as a matter of fact i wan to believe that having my mini iron man on the front page of cgtalk /spinquad and cgchannel might have help to sell on or two licence :-)

i also understand that octane is still in beta .. and do not have all the intended feature yet ( an i hope that more cool stuff is still in the oven )
please take what i write next for what it is worth .... also .... almost nothing :-(

my frustration at this point is coming from the fact that .. ( stuff that i consider very basic )
- no self illumination material (or light object )
- not being able to hide some object when i am working on an other ( example hiding kanneda from his bike )
- not being able to save or import material
- feel very limited with lighting as i do not have access to ""real"" light or a object with a strong luminosity
- no volumetric light , although i am looking into how to composite some mental ray stuff .. now that i have the connection from the camera to maya

granted that the main part of my frustration might come from the fact that i friend gave me a demonstration of his workflow in Arion and somewhat it was impressive ( yes i know it cost 10 x more :-) )
especially the part about material gestion
and teh fact that he could switch easyly between different render mode
object id / surface id and so
that he could color correct and modify his texture at loading time

as much as i was impressed i still prefer the interface from octane and especialy the price :-)
( beside the fact that we have direct access to the devs who seem to genuinly be interested i what we re saying )

well that all for now :-)

i am currently rendering my last test on this one .. and would give it another try with the next beta .

i saw that you location is La ?
i am down in santa monica ...
care to meet over a cofee and donut ? may be we could start a octane user group ?

I see, I share your frustration in this sense.
Couple of what you mentioned I believe I in development and hopefully will come in the following releases:
*self emitter
*maybe save/import material
*id pass material (can assign color without its color bleeding to the neighboring geometry or material)
* motion blurr (of objects)
those are among my top anticipated list, which will determine if I will be able to use Octane to render my thesis film in the timely manner. Volumetric will be sort of the long list in version 2 I guess if that's how the plan goes.
Our frustration are from different aspects, yet at least both are generated from anticipation for sure.

Nevertheless it's undeniable that Octane already shows its awesome potential even in its beta stage and quite some artists are able to produce stunning works with it.

@Xtreme3d:
1. it's funny I noticed several of your works has Flemish red as the dominant color scheme
2. Octane LA group? Brilliant idea! We should brainstorm and see how and where goes it.
3. J'adore le café et donut.

Cheers,
Thomas

yes my son did point it to me last week ..
i dunno.. i just really like red ..since i was a little kid .
i was a firefighter for 4 year back in france .. i guess ..it was just an excuse to ride in the BRT*
( big red truck )
2. Octane LA group? Brilliant idea! We should brainstorm and see how and where goes it.
yes that coul dbe very cool .. we could have secret handshake and such :-)
no seriously .. wanna talk about it ? ( christope.desse(thesignforemail)xtrm3d.com

xtrm3d You did really a great Job on Kaneda!!!
I read that these images, which already to me seem perfect, are not even the final ones ... I have no idea what will pull you out :)
Thanks very much for giving me the opportunity of this collaboration... I'm really impressed with the last results and I'm very happy to see what you could pull out from the model.
Thank you very much!
