Hi everyone,

I am a little worried.
I would like to acquire Octane render for my small business, and enjoy the discount very interesting. However, the demo is very unstable!
The software crashes all the time ! :o
I just do not explore the software to assess its potential.

The machine I use:
4x cores Intel i7 920 2.79 GHz
Tri-channel RAM: 12 GB
1x Nvidia GeForce GTX 285
7 x64 Win

Could you help me ?

Thank you very much by advance.
Best regards,

You might try and see if turning off Aero helps.

Or, if you're on win7/vista, try to run the app as administrator (right click/run as administrator).

I attach to this thread to signal a similar crash problem on my machine:

Windows XP Pro SP3
CPU AMD Athlon 3.6, 4Gb ram (well, 3Gb seen by OS)
nVidia GeForce 9600 GT 512 Mb
Video drivers v.197.45

Exported from Modo to .OBJ a couple small projects and they work well (ok, there's no SSS but that's ok). Then exported a slightly bigger project (it includes Modo SLIK elements, don't know if it crashed because of this reason) and apparently Octane starts importing correctly but when it starts the voxelizing phase it crashes (Dr. Watson).

Any hint on what can I try?

Thank you! Umberto
Umberto.

So, I probably didn't use the software correctly.
I have a few crashes yet, but it is acceptable to begin exploring the software.
This is my first test render :

Thanks for your help !

we recommend you upgrade to an x64 operating system, it will allow you to voxelise far bigger models...
octane is very stable if you know how to use it...

Does the voxel phase use system RAM or video RAM? Is the voxel phase dependent on scene mesaures (say, 1x1x1 meter vs 100x100x100 meters?)

Anyway... hope that in future releases the voxel phase will print something like "not enough resources" instead of Dr Watson ;)

voxelisation is done on the CPU and uses system ram, which is limited to 2GB per process on 32bit systems.
that's why we recommend you install an x64 OS, it has no limits. (it does, but they are WAY higher)
