If you really need a ton of ram look at the quadro series of nvidia cards. They're expensive but come with loads of ram. The new tesla's coming down the line are supposed to have a few gigs of ram too, but also expect a high price tag. If you are really curious about limitations before buying something, send me a file you think is on par for your work and I can try it on one of my gtx470's. Should be able to gauge it from there.
System 1: EVGA gtx470 1280Mb and MSI gtx470 1280 in Cubix Xpander for Octane, AMD 945, 4Gb Ram
All systems are at stock speeds and settings.

It is a hard decision as if v.2 will come with SSS and displacement map support, then I should wait to get a new card with more GPU rams. Assuming that Octane v.2 will come out around end of 2010 or early days, the same time when the new 28mm Fermi card is out, waiting would be a wise choise.
Althought one can't follow the advance of technology, but between getting a 3GB rams card in 6 months and getting a 1.5 GB rams now... I rather wait since OR is a GPU render base.
I do as hobby 3D art work ( http://www.mduque.com ) as I love 3D, and my workflow is: model in Silo/Hex -> Zbrush -> Render Engine
My sculpt models always goes above multi million polys and I generate texture, bump, displace, normal maps in Zbrush. Export the lower base mesh and apply the maps.
One last question to finalize my decision, will I need a higher card for what I do based on the flow I described above? I am a pure artist mind set type of man. Have mercy.

I'll do that. Thanks Radiance for your feedbacks.
