I was posting this earlier in the 3ds max plugin forum. without any answer from developers. Just, please tel us if you plan to change the matte-material and how it works now or if this is the final, how it works right now. As a hint. I love the way it works in vray.
"I have asked this before but did not really get an answer I think it deserves; Why have you set up the matte option as it is now in the later builds? Who want´s it to be this way?
To me it is totally useless and I have never seen a renderer / matte material, work this way.
As it is now, I have to render out two passes. one diffuse pass with the "shadow plane" hidden to camera, and then one shadow pass to get the shadow. The assumption that objects can get properly secondary light by a hdri image is to me very strange. or please, show me how to use this and how we get superior results. "

I don't really understand the new matte material's benefits in real world use.
Having a material that bounces diffused light and reflections into the scene is essential. It used to work like this, but now it's very limited. I can't do the basics with it anymore.
The way I understand it, the new matte material does some kind of fake reflections if you haven't got anything other than a background plate - but that should be a seperate option on top the extisting material, not a replacement for the whole workflow.

But this is all in the works currently, render passes, this is the next big thing for Octane so we just need to be a little patient.
