Octane no longer Blender friendly?
Hopefully no Adobe like subscription models or huge price increase for standalone or any other such bad ideas

Personnaly I have bought Octane 2 standalone because i'm a c4d user too, but I'm done using Octane with Blender, for now.
It's way too risky to use it professionnaly because there's no official exporter, and no simple/secure workflow.
i'm quite mad at Otoy for not involving ressources on Blender compatibility.
By ressources, I mean a developper who actually has the time to work on this (and not working on priority on Maya)
An official exporter for Octane 2 standalone would be the strict minimum, provided that Octane is advertised and announced as being compatible with Blender. In the facts it's not fully reliable.
I think Otoy will lose the Blender market if they don't do something about it.

That's a shame because the Adobe model is brilliant. I am a proud subscriber to PS CC. It has been the first time that I have actually been able to afford such brilliant software.00Ghz wrote:Hopefully no Adobe like subscription models or huge price increase for standalone or any other such bad ideas

I couldn't agree more. It does appear as if Blender is just the poor member of the community that gets very little support. If my reduced upgrade ends in a week then I that will seal the fate for Octane. At €99 it was within my price bracket and it sort of had an exporter thanks to the great work of Lionel. With version 2 it seems like Blender has once again been forgotten about.kiwimage wrote:Personnaly I have bought Octane 2 standalone because i'm a c4d user too, but I'm done using Octane with Blender, for now.

I am too to the entire cloud software pack. But I am aware that at any time Adobe can increase the price big time without you having the ability to do anything about it. And if you don't keep paying then you can't work or go to the pain of switching software if that is even an option.
Have patience guys, v2 will come....eventually. I am not happy at all that it takes so long, or that the dev is shared with maya but patience is a virtue.

Patience is a virtue... I do agree with that, generally speaking.
But we need to distinguish 2 cases here : the patience of the Hobbyists and the patience of the professionnals.
For Hobbyists, I guess it's not a big deal. It's about fun, experiments and doing art or personal projects, you can do it at any pace.
As a professional, the variable that changes everything is the client. My client = my boss.
And this boss has NO patience, because he can't afford it : he has expectations and a project to do, in time.
I can't say to a client who asks me a quotation : "you want me to do a 3d animation for within 2 weeks ? Please be patient, because I have no tool to do it"
I can't say that, without looking like an amateur, so either I find another solution (other softwares) or i lose the opportunity to get the job.
And if I don't get missions, I can't pay the rent. Freelancer situation here... we're not talking about patience any more , we're talking about software choices that directly impact on your productivity, results, meaning your survival in this competitive world !
Blender is considered as an Hobbyist thing, but it's a mistake.
Blender / Octane , if it existed and worked, could be the perfect choice for freelancers and small studio who don't want to hack softwares and who can't afford to invest 5000€ in a 3dsMax/Vray pack for example).
I don't understand what Adobe's price policy has to do in this subject. Is there a project to do a subscription based payment ? Octane+blender problem is really not about pricing, which is perfectly fine. It's about having something functional and reliable for blender to WORK with.

I'm assuming that my period of grace is over now and that I have missed the €99 upgrade. That being the case then I think that my Octane days are over. Without boring everyone to tears with all the details I'll just say that I simply cannot afford any more than €99 and that I can't see any point in paying that until I see the need to. i.e. there is an integrated Blender product.

You shouldn't be penalized for the plug-in not being out during the grace period. Let me look into this for you.steveps3 wrote:I'm assuming that my period of grace is over now and that I have missed the €99 upgrade. That being the case then I think that my Octane days are over. We are using Blender and Octane combo for Animated Serial Production currently underway at our studio and we are getting excellent results.
We tried various combo and settled on two Software for our weekly Episodic Television Production, Lightwave/Messiah and Blender/Octane and ended up building our pipeline along Blender/Octane/AfterEffects workflow. We are very happy with our decision and they work Beautifully. I hope once the series is on air, it should break a few myths about Hobbyist and Professional dynamics.
