I am not at all experienced with 3d or rendering software. If I am supplied with or purchase a model, how hard is it to get a quality render such as this?

Cheers.

Hi,

Octane is a renderer and does require a 3d modeling application in order to supply it with propper model data.
You might want to investigate the use of blender(free) or sketchup pro (easy).

why not the free SketchUp?
it's almost the same for modeling purposes and there are some good and free .OBJ+.MTL exporter (ruby scripts)
...until the dedicated Octane plugin is ready, of course :)

Those are really great renders ;)

But I need to say this even to just piss people off,... you should package a car model into octane so that everyone can make these

Car model (especially A8) will become the new "material test ball" (should have won the prize for new ball  )

If you win, can I have your prize :P
i won't win, i'm just submitting to get the competition going a bit, it's quite quiet.
I can't win / be selected as i'll be in the judge panel.

Nah, you are just rendering away to make all our renders look bad... hehehehe
It'll take me a while to post some wips of my entry. Since I've decided to have some fun with it (winning is great, sure, but having fun comes first) I'm taking the slow road. First I'm doing a new building project just for the heck of it (yeap I am a weirdo that has fun doing projects that will never get built), right now I've got the draft hand sketches almost ready and a general floor plan and section, then will come the modeling and texturing (and I'll post some wips then to get some feedback/help) and hopefully I'll have something ready in time. And if all goes well maybe a shy animation of a walkthru inside it.

Well, my girlfriend has always disliked 3Ds, a couple of weeks ago she had to do some materials test of a project she was working on, I told her to try it out in 3d, as it was easier to visualize, and to model it in sketchup (free version) so I gave her a few tips and in a few hours she had a model all set up and textured, we inserted it in octane and just added a sunlight and tweaked a few materials, choose a few cameras and she had some great image the next day to take to work and help them decide, they looked great even with almost no effort.
So yeah, do try sketchup, its pretty intuitive to start with and octane is the most friendly renderer I've worked with.
