I have a GTX260 for windows display and a GTX480 for octane rendering. The 480 is quite loud even when not used.

Is it possible to somehow deactivate/reactivate it when I dont need it (without taking it out physicaly)?

Thanks in advance
Chris

I've got 2 of them in my system here and they are not that loud.
They were before i added an extra fan to my system.

Make sure you've got enough airflow in your case...

My two GTX 470's sound like an airplane getting ready to take off. I know exactly what you are talking about.

I know that it's an expensive option, but my motherboard has 2 graphics card slots. So, I have a GTX 260 for Windows and my casual gaming needs. I then installed a Cubix GPU Xpander in the other slot with two GTX 470's in it. If I want to run Octane with the GTX 470's, then I turn on the Cubix Xpander before I power up. I know have the complete arsenal to throw at Octane (and the noise to suite!)

But, when I want the computer quieter, I shut off the computer and turn off the power to the Cubix Xpander. When I reboot...it's just the GTX 260 and much quieter.

I have pretty much the same setup, including the cubix box. My noise level stays pretty much constant no matter what I throw at it, and that noise level seems to be more from the case fan then anything.

You can always do what I use to do with my old studio. Get a really long VGA/DVI and USB extension and stick your PC in another room/closet. Leave your keyboard, mouse and monitor where it currently is and connect them there to the long cables from the PC. Now it is completely silent, to you.
