I have just given this a go with a fresh 14.04.1 desktop install and got octane going (GTX690 no problems yet).
I used Ubuntu's 'Additional Drivers' feature and installed the "NVIDIA binary driver - versino 331.38 from nvidia-331 (proprietary, tested)" driver.

I'm about to try installing the 340.24 driver package and i also want to try getting the quadro in my machine going too.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks Chris

Did you try rendering?

I think having tried 340, having issues, then uninstalling 340, I can't get back to 331. I will try a fresh install and see if that helps.

Yes, not much more than a few material previews however...
I installed 340.24 but not much luck there, I will need to spend some time getting the x-server working again :/
I will keep working on it when I get some more time later.

Hi Chris

I re-installed 14.04 over the top on my existing install, set the driver to 331, and everything works! I won't try to update to 340 until the Nvidia installer issues have been solved.

How did you install the 331 ? Did you simply made a apt-get install nvidia-331 ?

I'm pretty sure it came pre-installed with 14.04. I did a re-install of 14.04 and then went to Software and Updates ad 331 was there. However I didn't re-format prior to re-installing, so maybe it was a carry-over from the previous mess.

Ok, hopefully some progression.

I finally re-install Ubuntu 14.04 and Octane is working fine with the version 311 proprietary drivers installed by default with ubuntu but I had to make the installation after disabling the onboard video card otherwise the Nvidia card is never recognized.

Still some issues however, only the card connected to my monitor is recognized, the other Nvidia cards are not recognized by Octane.

Any idea ?
