Hi!

I'll soon need some external processing power. Are there any good farms out there that supports Octane/C4d?

Is this what the Amazon AMI is for? I've never got to understand this at all. I remember some fuzz about that V2 (a great while ago) would have Octane Cloud, is that the new "network" feature? So I rent a IP number somewhere and put it in there?

Sorry if it's a sloppy question but I feel that I'm just getting dumber and dumber trying to comprehend this myself.

hi, illmonkey =)

Wokstation on a cloud (OTOY's cloud) will be a service where You can run Your desktop apps from any device that has: screen, some basics inside that would be powerfull to open a browser & decent internet conection.

What You're going to get is a desktop like experience, then You can install whatever You want & do what You have to. As a baseline You get a cleint with GPU that will be about as powerfull as 670 (4Gb of RAM & almost the same speed).

As I understand version 2.0 allows You to export scenes (in ORBX format) - that is nesecarry to make a conection with the cloud - send Your scene over to be rendered. As v2 is already out, CLOUD is still ongoing project & probably soon OTOY will release some more info on that sooner rather than later.

For now (as far as I know) there's no way to buy a service like that (with multi GPUs), so You probably left with asking a friend, a coleague to help You out. Some Guys have pretty monstrous rigs & I'm sure they could help You (just a hint, as licence policy doesn't allow renting, delivering such service..but YOu still can ask for friendly help =)

Hi illmonkey,
Adding to Glimpse's info, the network rendering feature (in addition to the cloud offering) allows you to use GPU's on other machines on your LAN - your local network of workstations. Unfortunately, it is currently limited to 12 GPU's, which is not much more than you could run a single machine (with additional power) but Otoy are working on the licensing for this.

Best,

Thanks guys for the insight! I'm trying to stay updated and I hope that the service will be somewhat affordable.

I think it will be. The cloud version is using the network rendering functionality publicly introduced in 2.0, but further optimized for 10GE+ if you're looking for unlimited node rendering power per render job. We'll have more info shortly and opportunities for wider beta testing as we approach a full commercial release. The cloud platform we're building, I think, is going to expand the Octane ecosystem much farther than people may release in the long term. It will do a lot more than just provide cheap and scalable rendering power, although that is low hanging fruit :)

The AMIs on AWS are really just targeting developers, not artists or end users . In contract, The system that we will be launching for Octane users will provide nearly one click access to the cloud service, at a more effective cost per render than doing it on your own on AWS with the AMIs.

Sounds great Goldorak.

Will the cloud service be available in the UK?

cheers.
