Hello,

New Octane for Max user, coming from Vray.

Tried converting this apartment scene from Vray to Octane , deleted the windows (Portals are just too slow/noisy..), added an Octane Sun, and nothing else, just some emmissive textures for the ceiling fixtures, oh and some Octane IES lights in the background infront of the kitchen.

45 minutes on 2x GTX780, 6000 samples PMC (I think it's too much..), caustic blur @ 0.6, PMC maxdepth 10.., here is the result, which I HAD to clean up with Nice Image filter for Photoshop, and we STILL have noise  ...

Image

How do you Interior guys get cleaner noise? Do I just need to let the images cook longer? :? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

By the way comp/leves/denoising done in Photoshop. I still think 45 minutes for 2x 780's is way too long, and the image still has noise... Back to Vray perhaps? :( Do interior images just take THIS long to cook, always?

interior scenes are the slowest, try using portals even without the glass in sthe scene because even if the megasamples drop when using a portal, you will get a cleaner image much faster.
try to use less light in the scene as possible.
from what i know ies light ar slower than diffuse material with ies texture, try replacing them with ies texture.
try Direct light + diffuse and use a lower depth number (experiment from 3-8, and see that sepeed you get)
hope this helps.

put some invisible planar lights outside the windows, don't use portals
And yes, don't use ies, draw a circle, edit poly, and apply a diffuse material + ies texture

Much thanks to the gentlemen who posted help above!! :)

And here are some more images I just tooked tonight circa ~12min/each, PMC with NiceImage noise filter. I do love the results I just need to learn to be patient and improve my texturing and modeling skills now :P  .. Octane is not the problem at all, its my archviz skills haha.

Octane is awesome!

Portals are only usable for very small windows.

From my little experience, you can get really nice interiors using the DL/diffuse kernel, even using the AO kernel. By now I don´t feel like using path tracing or PMC.

I used to be a Vray and Maxwell user, and I can say that with Octane, you need to be careful that you are comparing apples to apples. Vray, as I'm sure you know, is a biased render engine. Maxwell is unbiased. The PT and PMC engines within Octane are Unbiased engines. The DL engine is a biased engine in Octane. I bring this up, because if you are comparing time and quality, I think comparing Vray to Octanes DL Diffuse engine is more fair than comparing to the PT or PMC engine. And, again, time and quality wise, comparing Octane's PT and PMC engines to a program like Maxwell, is more fair than a comparison with it's DL engine. Just my two cents.

I really think that virtually every granite counter top I have seen has been smooth like glass. I would personally take roughness down to 1% or less.
