anyone use a UPS for their workstation ? I never used to have problems but now with multiple graphics cards in my machine i cant see how to do a rendering (just the GPUS's or sometimes all the GPU's + the CPU) and also have the computer plugged into the UPS (cyberpower AVR1500). As soon as the rendering gets going for a few minutes, the UPS will do non-stop beeping (which can be avoided if you open up the UPS & break off the little speaker) but then it actually cuts off the power to the computer. There is no problem with the AC.
I'm waiting to hear back from cyberpower about this, but thought id see if anyone here has similar experiences.

as far as I understand Your UPS simply can't handle Your workstation & what You need is simply bigger unit. These GPU rigs with multiple cards draw a lot of energy & the battery gets old with time, recharge doesn't go to the levels it was meant for..

(that's just a guess though, but I wouldn't be surprised if You'd get somewhat similar answer =)

I had experience with UPSes - and yes - it beeps when overloaded - the GPUs draw a lot of power - it's like you have another computer hooked up..
UPS come with limits, I wouldn't be surprised your is like 1000 w - because they get expensive as they go up - and no you cannot hook up two (unless you have two PSUs) - you either need a bigger one, with 1500 W capacity or disconnect the one you have ..
- the reason I stopped using UPS is because of this.. nothing got burned up, ever (knock on wood)

yeah, it may be i simply have to give up on these UPS devices. May not be a big problem since my current office space is a lot more reliable with the AC than my previous space. Im still waiting to hear back from Cyberpower. In the old office space it used to be worth the investment just seeing the look on the faces of those that did not have UPS when the power went down :) (those were the days before i was using the GPU's)

Hi
i had a bad experience with ups. now i do not use one :)
it was not a top class neither bad. it was overloaded during render so unpluging it before rendering(anyway it needs safe saving projects not the render)
one day while the computer was turned off, there had been an electricty cutout. when it was on again ups didnt start to recharge. i needed to push the button on the ups. and guess what? boom. i was lucky the only thing that burned was psu in case.
i dont use an ups anymore since that day :)

Hi

IF AVR1500 is actually "Cyberpower AVRT 1500" then it's no suprise it's getting owerloaded 'coz it is actuall 900W UPS, It's 1500VA but only 900W so your machine with few GPUs can easily go above that Wattage and there is your problem. Check the specs here whttp://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups- ... 0AVRT.html

Or 950W in case it's this model - http://www.suntekpc.com/htm-2/ups-cp-av ... 500avr.htm

I Have APS 2200Ti UPS and it has 2200W of power and when i turn on all my machines, and start GPU and CPU renderign it draws 1900-1910W out of UPS and it still works just fine BUT it's not cheap one (My APC costs around 800-850 EUR) so just be sure you have adequate equipment and it should work just fine runing on UPS.

cheers
