when i did a small test, with only a few hairclumps the script exports relatively fast. But when i increased it to about 100 hairclumps, it took like forever to export. it took roughly 30 mins until it started to run through the timeline and begin the export.
Yeah someone else ran into this too, it may be due to the number of curves being generated but in testing I also found that Maya 2014 would slow down during the export and Maya 2015 wouldn't, but that was during the actual export and not the convert to curves which is what your problem seems to be.
Below are some stats from my test hair system for comparison (this was done using straight paintFX and soft body control curves and not with Maya hair or nHair, not sure if that would make a difference)

32755 - curves (hair strands) exported from Maya to the alembic file

3019192 - hair segments rendered in Octane (when Octane displays hairs in the render stats it counts each segment of each curve)

6.82 GB - the alembic file size for just the hair

397.5 MB - VRAM used by just the hair

0.004 - the render thickness of the curves

7 mins - average render time per frame (1024 x 1024, 3x GTX 580's, max samples = 300, PT - Diffuse depth = 4, Glossy depth = 8)

Hair shader is a diffuse with scatter/glossy mix material.

The below numbers were for export from Maya 2014, on the rig detailed in my signature. I also hid all in my display panel settings to optimise playback speed while exporting:

Convert to curves ready to export - 1min 2sec

Convert to curves and export 1 frame to alembic - 1min 8sec

Convert to curves and export 100 frames - 14min

Convert to curves and export 200 frames 35min

As you can see there was a slow down as more frames were exported. I re-ran the export from Maya 2015 and the slowdown disappeared and remained at a constant 6sec per frame, the full 200 frame export taking 22min 14sec, all other numbers were the same as with 2014.

it seems like i am unable to export to other harddrives, i have only been able to export to my desktop. maybe it is something about sub directories?
I've tested here and I have no problems exporting to any local drives or directories, I haven't tried exporting to any network dives as none are online right now but in any case any issues there would likely be network permissions issues and not anything to do with the script.

this is just an suggestion, it might be a good idea to put a checkbox in the script to enable/disable saving the scene. i ended up with many re-saved maya scenes.
That's a good idea, I'll look at it if I ever get back into the script.
