Hi

Since I can't test the demo, because I just have my shitty netbook right now, I'd like to ask you guys some questions before I hit the purchase button.

I don't see anything about mesh output in the features list. Is there such a thing?
And can you create objects (e.g. whitecards with gradients / textures ) and move/rotate/scale them within octane?
and then maybe render as a spherical cam to generate HDRIs?

I know it sounds strange. Going to octane should be a one way ticket.

But what I wanna do is to quickly create a light / studio setup in octane and then bring it back to Houdini, which is our main tool in the pipeline. ( "Why?" because it doesn't really make sense to export animated procedural stuff from houdini as obj sequences )

If stuff like that is not there, but will be implemented sooner or later, I'll purchase right away :)

Any help is very much appreciated ( maybe from the devs ? )

With kind regards

Hi,

What do you mean by mesh output? Octane is a render engine, it outputs images.

I read somewhere on this forum that move, scale, rotate will be available in the future. But for now you typically setup up your scene in your host app.

Regarding spherical cam I don't know.

You will be able to output hdri images when we get more image format (currently it's .png only).

hope this helps,
cheers.

Thx for reply Amplitude!

What I mean is just an export feature for whitecards/arealights, that you create within the octane network. I usually light my scenes with these. So octane could spare me hours of work through realtime feedback of lighting and reflections.

So I basically wanna do this:

1. Output scene snapshot from houdini
2. import to ocane
3. setup lights and reflections in realtime
4. export lights/whitecards back to houdini pipeline

I don't know how powerful the scripting is in octane, but if I could access the pos/rot/scale of the lights and output it to a file, I could write some export scripts.

ok I see your point, it makes senses for light tweaking indeed.
But we don't have area lights yet it's scheduled for beta 2.3, thus it's difficult to predicted if we will be able to export back the cards/emmiters.

otherwise points 1,2,3 are feasible today.

Daaaaaaamn I misread about scripting capabilities.
there's just a scriptable console version.... :/
And I've read in the forum that scripting is not planned to be implemented.

I guess octane is not for me then. -_-

maybe one of the dev will stop by and make a clear statement about your requirements.

Hey,

We are opting for a visual programming paradigm instead, using nodes, much like houdini, but only shading and lighting. (and maybe more in the future)
