Using the 2.0 Standalone, I tried testing out the new displacement feature. However, I'm unable to connect a turbulence node to the displacement pin. Changing the displacement texture pin in the material to other procedural textures has no effect on the preview. Loading a grayscale image into the displacement worked fine, however.

Is the 2.0 displacement feature limited to only texture map sources? The features list says: "...displacement mapping allows the height of points on a surface to be adjusted based on an image value.", so I guess no procedural displacement?

Here's what the new manual's 'release notes' says:

◾Displacement mapping
For giving objects depth and detail, a new pin is added in the material nodes allows the height of points on a surface to be adjusted based on an image value. Displacement mapping is currently limited to image textures and UV mapping.

So basically, you're right.

Ah, hadn't seen the manual. Ok, thanks.

I'd be a bit more bummed, but I realized that even if procedural textures were supported, Octane doesn't even have enough procedurals to be useful in most displacement situations for me anyway.

Is the invert node working with Disp? It doesn't seem to work for me.

cheers

Does that make sense? I thought a turbulence node is also just a normal texture ... precalculated and procedural, but still a texture?

this is not big trouble, because displacement is based on textures.

It would be nice to be able to use the procedural textures, thou. Or in a more distant update, the colormapped directional displacement. :-)
