Actually, it's 3D-scan data, with a custom shader to blend the normal maps, but yeah the principle is the same.

I totally agree ! This is the best facial animation I have seen so far. I have seen some very realistic faces, but with less range of emotions.

Looks like it's got some kind of really accurate muscle system also affecting the weights because otherwise the number of points is too low for that good of an effect.
