I'm no expert first of all...

But I cannot for the life of me get this glass to render correctly. The black glass you see in this image is supposed to be clear (It is the clear glass material from the DB). If I move the glass cover away from the light head it renders clear.. Once it is back on it it always black.

I have tried removing faces and moving about every single slider in the material options.. No luck.

Any help appreciated!!!

hi,
have you tried to switch the kernel to path tracing or pmc?
and the glass has thickness or is a single side polygon?

Hi thanks!

Yes I have tried changine the GI mode as well as Kernels.. It does indeed change the material but all my other scene objects are thrown into a tailspin.

The glass does have thickness and I deleted one side of faces.. So the current view is a single side poly. I would like the effect of the thick glass if possible though.

Pathtracing does help.. I guess I will just have to adjust my other materials now

It's also much much much slower to render but is giving me better results.

you should tweak down the AO distance when rendering in DL. This causes the glass to be black when placed near another object.

If you render using direct lighting you should check 2 things:
  • you have to enable fake_shadows for the glass material, otherwise the ambient occlusion will assume the glass blocks out all light.
  • the specular depth has to be set high enough. If it's a single sheet of glass (double sided) it should be set to at least 4 if you need ambient occlusion.
For path tracing you need more depth since the light you see behind the glass traverses the glass twice (into and out of the armature), so max depth (or Specular depth in recent versions) should be set to at least 6.

And just to be sure, the reflection and transmission for glass should usually be set to white (100% brightness).

Octane Material Properties.
In "Basic" tab - check "Fake Shadows"
Than in "Fake Shadows" tab - check "Fake shadows"

This will do the thing.

Ok.. so I must be crazy but I cannot find this fake shadow option. I am using the C4D plug-in.. am I just missing something obvious?

Thanks!

Edit nevermind.. Just found it when creating a new specular material - It doesn't show in the material editor pop up window.
