Yeah it shares 1 scene between the 2 cards. It will use the memory cap of your lowest card. So which ever has the least amount of vram, the gtx285 with its 1gb vram for example, will be the most memory your scene can use, not a combination of the two cards.
To set the scene to use multiple gpu's go to file > device manager. you should see a drop-down menu listing the active gpu and right below it another gpu, if available. form that second drop-down menu select the secondary gpu you'd like to use. once selected click o the "add" button right next to it. You are now ready to use both cards. Pretty easy. You can only really do this while there is nothing in the preview/render window. It should run both gpu's at full stream.

Hey haven, I purchased it off of ibuypower. It has some mixed reviews, many who rated 5 stars then the occasional guy who had a backstory about the CPU being welded or something... but I'm not exactly in a position to spend a 1-2k extra for something from FNW, voodoo, etc. My last computer I bought from Vigor and was really happy with their service, but I just found out they were "robbed" apparently, and everything including their website was shutdown. It really shocked me, especially since I've gotten over 20,000 hours of use on this computer and it still runs strong. Anyway I'm not paranoid, and I'm a bit tech savvy with computers (mostly software =p), but still haven't built up the guts to build my own. Hopefully if there are any issues I can assess the problem quickly.

I noticed something also:
Octane won't see the second GPU if PhysX is disabled in the nvidia panel.

Sorry bout bumpin this but I wanted to ask a question about the 1 week discount. If I buy Octane now, could I install it on my new computer in a couple weeks or does the software/license bind or something to the computer you purchase/download it on?
