Hi all,
I'm after a bit of advice on a new pc for Octane rendering.
I'm going to be working on high res print stills, from high poly CAD (6 million+). There will be a few textures including HDRs.
I will also need to produce animations with this setup.
I guess my first question is, would the 6GB Titans have enough RAM to handle this amount of geometry and textures?
As the Titan's are not server grade GPU's, are they more likely to burn out, if rendering 24/7?
Would x2 K6000's be the best bet?
Any advice, or setup suggestions on this would be great.

Ok, I'm going to order a TITAN 6GB to test out the limit of geo and textures.
Looking at the main pcs on the market, the Boxx looks good, but being in the UK, the import duty etc. make this a bit pricey.
The Digital Storm rigs looks awesome, but again these guys are in the US.
Are there any companies in the UK, which would custom build something like a x4 Titan rig, with suitable motherboard, cooling etc.? And could give guidance on the best setup.

jokes aside..there are some companies like scan who can build nice rigs, however most of them are gamer oriented.. There's no need to step to pro cards unless You're looking' to use rig for other cad software that have optimised drivers. if 6gb is enough for You scenes simply get 4x 780, decent mobo capable to house 4way (dual slot) cards with lower end quad (if You're not going to use it for CPU intensive tasks) & that's it. For better temps & stability under 24/7 You can invest extra kEu for full loop. Depending on Your needs for other expansions &/or water cooling setup choose a case, good power supply & that's it =) if You need any help - drop a line & I'm pretty sure guys will give You some advice depending on Your needs, budged & so.

Good to hear that the pro cards aren't a must. Originally, for some reason, I was thinking I had to have the Quadro and Tesla cards, but the Gallery section of this site has some fantastic animations and large scale renders using the GTX and Titans.
I've got the Titan coming in the post, so will test what I can get on the 6GB limit and go from there.
I'm most likely going to get back and ask your advice on motherboards etc. and how large a power supply I need for a 4 card rig. Oh, and what is a 'extra kEu for full loop'.

Pro cards were designed for different tasks & oriented for different audience, however they are basically the same under the cover =) usually the difference is that they have optimised drivers, more of vRam (ECC too) compared to same architecture based gamer cards & lower price tag. Dual precision performance is cropped for GTX line, but You don't need it as Octane is relying on SP performance. Teslas & Quadros aren't clocked so aggressively thus could keep lower temperatures during extended loads & use less electricity, what is important for big data centers.
motherboard depends on how much cards You want to use. After You'll end up with GPU You're going to choose + rest of the system power brick will be calculated accordingly. Probably You'll end up with 1200W or 1500W PSU if adding 4x Titans + system =)
'extra kEu for full loop' - extra 1000 euros for water-cooling (few water blocks for GPUs, CPU, dual pump, few radiators, fans, reservoir, some tube, etc - depending on Your needs). Typically with multiple high end GPUs You'll end up with temperatures ~80-85C under load..- with good water-cooling You'll probably see 40-45C with less noise. Less heat, more stability, longer lifespan..better sleep (no surprises in the morning =)

ok, so I've tested the Titan black (and went ahead and purchased a copy of Octane for maya).
Firstly, the speed of Octane is very impressive.
The tests so far have covered a 5-6 million poly CAD model, with a couple of HDR's textures on the lights, and rendered out at A3 300 dpi.
The RAM usage is around 2.5 (listed by Octane) and the system registers just over 3GB.
Setting the shaders to plastics, some transparent objects and SSS (just getting my head around these at the mo) and using Path Tracing, the render is pretty good at 1 hr 20. There's a little noise in the image, but a quick clean in neat image removes this. And I guess rendering for another 40 min or so will clean this up.
I've got a large list of newby type queries, but as these are mainly Octane for maya related, I'll list these over in that forum.

I'm keen to get a 8 core Xeon (for photoshop work etc.) and 64GB RAM too. Oh, and a solid state drive.
Any advice on UK places that I can approach, would be great.

Don't wan't to spoil up Your Xeon plans, but I think for photoshop it's more important speed of cores, not the count..pluss it is stepping into GPU world too & more functions come to be speed up by Graphic cards =)
Personaly I would not go for Xeon route unless I need it =) cheaper solution would be having 4way capable mobo with four GPUs & mid-to-higher-end CPU. Intel partners are prepping to launch new set of mobos for soon to be upgraded procesor line.
take a look around to websites like Tomshardware.com, anandtech.com or hexus.net (uk oriented) for some hardware news to get the beat what's happening =)
as for teh rigs, look at signatures & You'll get pretty good picture around what people are using here =) from my observation majority sticks to lower-end, but multi GPU rigs..less likelly You see with Xeon based server grade rig (unless some use those for other than GPU tasks alone).
