I am currently using 3ds max 2013 and I try to export my scenes as obj and then import them into octane standalone version 1.36. I am using "max2octane_1.022h" script to export my scenes, but when I import them into octane I cannot really locate my objects, until I click on one of the "camera view presets" (Front view, left view etc.). I have tried exporting very simple scenes composed by a sphere positioned in the origin of 3ds max and a target camera directed to it, but nothing seems to be working. I have also tried this with octane version 1.20, but there is no difference. I always used one of the "camera view presets" to locate my objects until now, but I really need to find a way to export my camera position properly. In addition, I am currently working on my laptop on win8 which has a GT 640M, however, I don't think that my gpu is causing the problem. Any ideas what is going wrong?
Hi Octanius,
The OBJ/Wavefront format does not support camera information. It is purely geometry and limited material information.
The way these export scripts transfer the camera position though to octane is via command line arguments.
You will need to use the "render" or some such button on the export script window to get this to work. It should export the obj and automatically fire up octane with the camera in the right place.
Thanks
Chris.

In addition, do you know if there are any available plugins for 3ds max that can export alembic file format that support camera information, because I want to render a fly-through of a space I have recently designed. In fact, I have set the camera to follow a path and then I tried to export my scene in alembic format using an alembic converter plugin I found on the web, but once again the camera info was not really transferred to octane, any ideas how I can make this work?
Alembic should work for this. Camera information should be transferred into the standalone with alembic, along with the rest of your animation.
I don't know 3ds max too well, so hopefully someone who does will chime in and let you know a good exporter.
You might have to tweak export settings, or find a different exporter.
Thanks
Chris.
