Much as I'm one of those who want hair/fur rendering I agree to a large extent with FrankPoole. There's still way too much you need to do in post to easily composite.
I can understand that the rewrite slowed some features down, but the slightly annoying thing is that standalone has had the ability to import background footage plates since 1.2. I, along with others have asked several times to add this feature to Max so we can at least see if our lighting and composition matches the background plate. That would be a huge time saver, but requests for it go unanswered.
So yes it's a shame new features are not coming fast, but worse that old features which are 8 months old are not making their way into plugins.
As for hair and Fur, I posted a workaround maybe 6 months ago that showed how to get hair working in 3dsmax 2014. (Bascially if you render scanline first then switch to octane, it works). So if I can get it working, is it really that hard to fix the code in Max?
I hate to complain, none of us know how hard this rewrite of the core was, but it does seem that development is focussed on standalone, nothing since 1.2 affects my workflow.
Hopefully Octane has some things to pull out post 1.5, I really hope it does!

Please, don't complain! Octane is one of the best GPU renderers in the world! I love it and all the new features are amazing and they were worth waiting! I agree about the lack of displacement though...
that is the only disappointment

Thank you very much for that feature. I asked for, and I got it ! Nice.•On the time line, the time can be displayed as the frame number, and the shutter interval can be specified as a percentage of the interval between two frames.
This said, I agree with some people about LUA. For me, the only benefit of LUA for what I have understood so far is for me the ability of scrolling an animation on a timeline. Beside that, as a pure artist with no knowledge at all nor ability to coding, LUA scripts implementation has no meaning and is totally useless. So, from my own selfish point of view I think that the development time spent on LUA was mainly a huge loss of time while many very needed features are requested by users for ages...
Please understand that a render engine is before everything a tool for artists, aimed to make images. Not everyone has skills in programming, and the main concern of artists is to get tools ready for use. Not a tool box only understandable by coders to make ourselves our tools. This can come later for more advanced users, but meanwhile every simple artist is waiting for more basic and necessary features, and even with the enthusiasm we have for Octane since its birth, maybe some of us could have to switch to an other render engine for production by necessity.

As for LUA, this is how I see it. People can make scripts, and share them/sell them. This can give functionality for us that wouldn't be possible otherwise.
For studios, they can create scripts so that Octane fits into their pipeline. My guess is this is the reason they are pushing LUA right now. From what I remember, the new fantastic four will be rendered in Octane and I'm sure they will need to create scripts to be able to mold Octane into their workflow.
For the lone artist, it doesn't mean anything right now, but over time you could see cool scripts pop up.

I understand that, but I don't see this as a priority while many basic features present in any render engine are still not there after 4 years...For the lone artist, it doesn't mean anything right now, but over time you could see cool scripts pop up.
I felt in loved with Octane since the beginning for its speed and quality of the rendered images versus other engines available at this time, but some weak points which were fully still acceptable and understandable two years ago for a young software in early development become a real brake to use it as a daily tool.
The software improved a lot, it is a fact, but the priorities of the coders, imho didn't follow the actual short term needs of the users and most needed features have not been treated first, even when they were simple. For example, the negative scaling in transform has been awaited for around 1 year before being implemented.

Hi, my name is Marcin, and I am a hobby user of octane.
I feel that I joined a support group addicts.
I'm a hobby user of octane, and I think, I will never be professional user.
Why?
I bought a license for the ocane in December 2010, but I'm still working in other render software.
I use octane only for fun, for my personal projects. I can not work with it in real, commercial projects. Octane still i not suitable for interiors rendering. Difuse + AO is one and only usable engine for now, but it isn't good. It is'nt phisical correct if I remember? The biggest advantage of the octane software had to be physically correct calculation of light? I may be wrong, but PMC was supposed to be such a engine... for interrior renderig
Lua, and all the animation stuff is usless for me.
Personaly I need UNDO command, good quality render engine for interriors without fireflys, shadow catcher with reflections, dissplacement, batch renderer (not commnad line), procedural lights, or better IES etc, etc...
Ocane is now very stable, faster, and faster then years ago... but still is very hobby software.
If the development process will look like now I do not think'll stay with octane, although I love it!
... and as I wrote at the beginning, I'm addicted to him. I visit this forum every day and every day I wait for news ... the wonderful news that the octane is suitable for my professional work ...
I still hope that one day it will happen!
