Hey everybody,

This is my first post and first WIP using Octane Render. My buddy Nick was kind enough to shoot over his Johnny 5 Maya model. I brought it into Octane and had a blast creating the materials, playing with HDR image lighting and messing with the camera tools. I do photography and Octane makes so much sense to me. I did this on my 3 year old Macbook Pro before the unibody design. I'm planning on purchasing this amazing renderer, but I'm thinking of building a PC to utilize a better GPU - dual GTX 470 or a single GTX 480.

This might be the wrong place to ask this, but if I buy a license can I transfer it to a new machine?

Anyways, let me know what you guys think. First, one is a little dark, but I wanted to get the red LED lights glowing. I'm not sure how to do that in Octane. I also forgot to smooth the geometry on the eyes. Renders aren't super clean, but my old MBP with a GeForce 8600M GT was working hard to get renders out. Still, it's pretty acceptable, but I'd love to see this renderer fly on a fast PC rig.

Thanks guys! I love how quick the forum responds.

Radiance thanks for that AA post. That's really helpful. I was wondering if I bought the full version for my mac, and then wanted to transfer the license to a new computer (preferably a PC) will I be able to do that?

mlody47, yes, this is the first of many renders. The modeler, is know working on finishing the body and the rest of his arms and treads. His face is rigged up, so I can animate all the moving parts like the antennae and his eyes. I am guessing to make his LED mouth glow, I'll have to do that in post in After Effects. Also, I'm a big fan of your work. That Geforce rendering you did blows me away!

I've read you can import animations in future versions, so I'll animate Johnny once he's all rigged up.

For some reason the vimeo tag wasn't working, so there's the URL as well.

Finally pulled the trigger and purchased Octane Render. Best bang for buck for a renderer. 512 s/px. Hope to finish the model and get him animated and rendered in Octane. It was rendered on my 2 year old MBP with a GeForce 8600M GT. It took about a min. each frame. I can't wait to get this render beast on a faster GPU.

Yeah. Once the model is done, I'll take it into mudbox and roughen him up a bit. He looks super clean, but it great to see the materials. I'm also going to try procedural textures in the new 2.2 beta release.

@xtrm3d I bought one of your videos of Gnomon. Great work, it was the cell shading one for Maya with the truck and the mig. I was looking into moving down to Hollywood to go to school at Gnomon. How do you like teaching there? Any advice?

Hey brodo, I like it alot! This brings up childhood memories, looking forward to the roughed up version. Compliments to your buddy Nick, modeling Johnny 5 is proofing his exquisite taste ;)
