Does overclocking effects render time in octane?

As the tittle says. i am just curious does OC will have and effect to the render time we get compared to the stock core speed.

Based on my knowledge of hardware I'd say 'Definitely' is the answer.

That said; there is often diminishing returns when overclocking (ie 20% overclock doesn't always equal 20% performance increase).

I'm very interested in the result though! If you have time to test it use the standard benchmark scene & try increments of 5% so there are clear data points and we can draw some definitive conclusions from the results!

(I'd test myself/contribute; but the gtx590 on air is not likely to be capable of 5%, let alone more than that! :D)

im curious too about the result. since octane render only use cuda cores to calculate. thats why sli won't work.

so i need a confirmation from the dev if overclocking the cards will have some effects to the render time. there are a lot of things need to be done for overclocking, such as flashing ln2 bios and etc. so before get into trouble. need confirmation first.

those 2 780 lightning is beggin to be overclocked. :lol:

If You play on air, I wouldn't think 'bout overclocking at all.. - at best You get 5-10 percent of performance boost, but at expence of runing higher temperatures that shortens the life of GPU & increase the possibility of failure. Adding higher noise output into consideration I see overclockin' GPU with stock coolers as something that is completelly not wort at all.

ahaaaa! i guess there is some right in this. BUT.
the card only runs at 70c when full load on auto fan. idle around 39c.
if i crank up the fan to full, the temp will only be around 61c when full load.

i used to repair gpu so i know the gpu can actually handle temperature around 90c-100c.
plus certain card like this msi is using high component to take a beating. it was design to break world records. so i don't think temperature and lifespan is an issue

10% performance increase is a lot to be honest.
save money rather than buying 780ti.

however will it cause a lot more noise output?
because i don't understand how octane uses the gpu to calculate stuff. :lol:

I have slightly overclocked my 780Ti.
The core and memory.

Finally from 7,7Ms/s I got 8,5Ms/s on benchmark scene - BUT - got a crash after 2 minutes.
Intriguing is that the temperature during the crash was about 63C.
Before overclocking this card was runing up to 72C and no crashes at all...

I don't know what was the reason of the crash though, but had no time to find the reason so far.

At best I could only ever get about 8% boost in Octane performance, while pushing my cards to the edge on air (780 and 780 ti)...I just don't think it's worth all the noise and risk (although Both cards well below temp danger zone hovering around or below 80C.

I also encountered some errors when I pushed the cards too far. They artifacted and crashed. Not sure what was going on. Didnt like the idea of this so went back to stock speeds. My ti couldnt be over clocked very much whereas my reference 780 was a beast. (+200mhz GPU and +150mhz memory).

I guess some might find overclocking useful. 8% isnt justification for me.

depends on how far You push..as more You overclock more heat will be generated. if the card is setuped to keep itself at constant temps under load (let's say 80C) it will spin fans as fast as needed & higher RMPs will give more noise that very much depends on cooler design too.

Completelly agree with this. For some stability is much more important. Would I risk to fail during render time just to get extra 5-10% boost? No..
But if You're just playing around (no deadlines, clients or money on the line), I guess it's nothing bad.

my Titans are overclocked but fun speed has its own graph

very loud noise but excellent performances.
