Quickest way to render a mask image of several objects?

mh, some uninspired guess: since you can re-do a rendering countless times, you may just take the scene/camera pos you had before, hide any element except the one you want to mask out, render it again, this time with alphachannel on, probably with the fastest possible settings, and just get the alpha mask for this particular element in photoshop; repeat for any other object you need.
makes me think of a render "macro" that writes out a psd file containing alpha channels for selected scene objects - sounds like a cool idea
and shouldn't be that hard to achieve also...
