When you look at other render engines, most of them have a huge list of precious metals like gold, platin, whitegold and a lot of gemstones like ruby, saphire, diamond and so on!
I think this is missing in octane and thats a huge leak. A view months ago, there was a discussion thread about gold and someone from the octane team posted a material called "colored metall" ID:616 which he said is perfect for gold, physically correct, because it has a falloff map, which gold usually has. I use this material from that day on and it is "nearly" perfect. It is just too dark and over saturated, but the rest is perfect! I know that because i am a goldsmith and work every day with those materials and gemstones.
Chrome is no whitegold, cause whitegold looks diferent and silver does also not look like chrome or whitegold. also platin looks completely different. A blue sapphire doesnt look like a tansanite and a emerald does not look like a peridot or a turmaline. And so on! I know the differences and i also know what the difference is!
I know octane but i NEVER would have had the idea to use falloff map to make gold realistic like that and i think the base preparation of the physically correct base for those materials, can only be done by a real octane material expert. One of the team itself!
So here is my suggestion: we create 2 new sections in the live database: NR1 is precious metals and nr2 is gemstones! one of the experts from the octane team makes the base. For example for yellowgold, whitegold, platinum and so on and also makes a base for gemstones. I as a goldsmith will invest 2 or more days of my sparetime and make those materials perfect. i can achive this by putting those materials on 1 of my 3d jewelry that really exists and put it under the same light conditions as i have here in my business and tweak all those materials until they look 100% like they look here in reality. This will give the most realistic and perfect precious materials possible in ANY render engine available yet!
What we need:
Precious metals: yellow gold 10karat, 14 karat, 18 karat, pure 24 karat
whitegold 10, 14, 18 karat
greengold 10,14,18 karat
platinum pure
stainless steel for jewelry (high reflection, dark shadows,)
silver 850 and silver 925 (sterling silver)
Gemstones: Diamond (white, blue, yellow, pink), Tanzanite, Ruby, Emerald, Sappire, Tourmaline (different colours), Demantoid, Zircon, Spessartite, Alexandrite, Tsavorite, Rhodolite, Spinel, Peridot, Turquoise, Topaz, Aquamarine, Amethyst, Quarz adjustable (colour), Opal, Pearl, Moonstone, Lapis Lazuli, Moldavite, - those are the most important.
Also to mention.....you NEVER should use the "smooth" function on shaped gemstones. NEVER! The edges of the cut have to be completely sharp.
This is my offer. Make this base and i will invest a lot of time for all of you guys to make those materials and stones perfect and this will give us all the best possible gemstone and precious metals available! Contact me, message me and i am here to serve you! Hope we can work together on this to make octane better!

There's interest form me. I'm not sure, with how good your stuff already looks, what you need someone else's input for if I'm honest.
Not that I could help.

I render in Octane over years now. I know how to "tweak" gemstones and materials to look ...hm...OK. But i also render in Arion for example and see the results there! Jewelry rendering is a growing business and often used for other things too. When you know octane, you know how to make materials look...OK. But have a look at the live database. Gold, Gold yellow, Gaussian gold.....what is gaussian gold??? and so on. I tryed all those materials and...they are not good. Sorry elvis....not your mistake. They are simply physically not correct. Thats why sutch material need a BASE!There's interest form me. I'm not sure, with how good your stuff already looks, what you need someone else's input for if I'm honest. Not that I could help.
I never would have had the idea to use falloff map for make gold look realsitic. Never. But that was the trick to make it look nearly perfect. There are definetly tricks for other materials too, especially when using correct gemstones. I am no octane material expert, others are and those should make the "base" correct and i could give it the final tweak to make it look perfect!
A solid material database is a must have in my opinion for every serious renderengine. at least a solid base of carpaint, metals, precious metals, fabric, plastic, glas, translucent, gemstone and so on. A solid base, where the user can build on and go to the next level. At the moment materials are totally messed up. A complete chaos! Some work in 1.20 some in 1.25. Some work, some dont, some look ok in 1.20, some look completeley different than in 1.20 and so on. I know its because of the new sdk and transforms, but at least it is still a choas, even if you ONLY use 1.20. If i havent had my cinema4d offline possibility, where i can save my own made materials, i would have been desperated

Thats my opinion and why i think we need it and i am willing to help.......if me help is wanted

Of course more materials are welcome. I don't do this type of work so I might only use them very occasionally but it is nice if they are available. Perhaps the lack of reply is due to the small number of people using Octane for Jewellery as opposed to arch viz etc. Don't be discouraged but if you spend a lot of time on it I think Otoy should pay you something for improving their materials database. I agree they need to do a cleanup anyway. I can't see why they can't create some Jewellery category for you. I guess its up to Otoy to respond to your post rather than the community.

Nah.....i don´t want money from them. I also dont want money for betatesting c4d. Also the jewelry materials are not for me! I already have my own as you can see in my renderings. They are good. But not perfect or at least as good as i think they could be, especially when i look at the materials in arion! I like to help if i can, and i think jewelry materials is a thing where i could help! Others are necessary too like for example Leather, fabric, clothes, carpaint and so on, but i can´t really help on them!
What i can NOT do, is build a correct base
Chris!

Chris!
The best solution is using "nk" materials, but I don't know how easy it would be to add them to Octane?
