Make me weep due to the CUDA dependency.... a card very nearly as fast as a 780ti for under 400 Euros *and* 4 GB of video mem..... I'm depressed.
AMD R9 cards
Yeah but You can buy 4GB card with CUDA for a a lower price than that (670 or even 770).. so it end's up from what point You're looking to =)
If they have to develop the engine with separate codes or on different language we might not see some features or so..-it was a choice. At the moment AMD couldn't fight harsh the nVidia or Intel in performance.. so the only way for them to compete is to lower the price. But this might change one day.
iIn the end, they say: You get what You pay for. Usually the price for the part do reflect it's value, but You should take the context. Personally I'm using 670 that I bought just before release of Titan & I'm very happy with it!

Sure I can get CUDA cards for that price ... but not nearly as performant .. the 290x is very, very fast for the price, it is more than competitive, I'm not sure why you say it cant. The downside is, the AMD chips get pretty hot and use more power.
I use a GTX 670 myself ... works, but I'm waiting for the 880 next year.

Yes, it would be really great if octane could deal with OpenCL. I would have immediately switched to AMD graphics cards. The computing power of AMD's GPU is enormous ... But ... these are just dreams .. that will most likely never happen: (

With apple moving to AMD GPU's (if they are) its realistic to think that adobe will push openCL development & there could be good motivation for developers to develop for a unified (or non-proprietary) openCL platform... The competition Could be good for everyone
