that's a very nice system for octane.
i'd recommend a thermaltake cable management 850 watt.
it's enough for your 2 cards and it does'nt drain your powerbill like a 1000+watt PSU does.
Radiance

Radiance
Win 7 x64 & ubuntu | 2x GTX480 | Quad 2.66GHz | 8GB
If I understood correctly dheer is planning to add one more tesla card in future. In that case 850w may be insufficient. Having stronger PSU doesn't mean you computer will drain more power, in contrary. Stronger PSU's have better efficiency and actualy draw less power.

Well you can go with the PSU radiance suggested and then maybe get a secondary, gpu only PSU later when you pick up the tesla. They're not too expensive @ about $50-70 USD.

i just got the system below and am trying octane on it. built/bought from ibuypower.com at ~$4500 (after discounts). one problem with the setup is the lack of being able to use 4-pci-e cards. that board isn't laid out for it.
as you, i run 3ds max and want octane to run. right now though, the demo keeps crashing after a short time of manipulating a simple obj in the render render frame view. (also, on a side note, the demo 1.021 got kicked by Norton saying it had a virus... turned of AV for install and install went through)
Case - CoolerMaster HAF 922
CPU - Intel® Core™ i7 980X
RAM - 24 GB DDR3-1333
GPU's - 2x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7
PSU - CoolerMaster Silent Pro 1000W
HDD's - 2x 640 GB HARD DRIVE
DVD's - 2x 24X Dual Format/Double Layer DVD±R/±RW
OS - MS Windows 7 Ultimate

That is pretty common for anti-virus software to kick out flags when trying to install software. Doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen. Usually most install documentation will tell you to shut down any AV software before installing. I am not sure if Octane's says this though. Looks like a good system. Price is pretty good considering its 2k+ just for the CPU and GPU's together.

ya, that didn't surprise me.... just wanted to give a heads up since the previous demo didn't trigger it.
To dheer:
If the system is really build for Octane as the title of the post suggests then:
You wont need high end gaming motherboard with 4x SLI.
You wont need 12GB RAM.
You wont need top of the line CPU.
What you need is excellent cooling and 1200-1500W PSU.
Your configuration would makes sense to me only if you plan to assemble hybrid Gaming/Octane station.
If I was you I would spend the extra cash on third gtx480.
