Hi all!
First of all, congrats and my deepest respect for the efforts of the octane team and their plugin developer(s). Imho, if this render continues developing, It's going trough the roof!
I have a few remarks tough, it are just settings and stuff that happens when I use Octane.
First my specs are:
PC, windows 7.
Intel i7-3960X 3,30GHZ
Geforce GTX 580
32 GB RAM
C4D R15, octane 1.00 RC2
1) I create a sky object and put an eviroment tag on it. I put an HDR image in the texture slot of that env tag. When i want to adjust the power with the slider, it drags very slow. In fact not really possible to adjust porperly, so I have to type in the numbers. Is that normal?
2) updates in live viewer: I know this has been discussed a lot allready, but just to be sure: At this development stage, the live viewer only automaticly updates: camera moves, enviroment tag texture values, some material values and lights. But it will be updating on geometrie, material textures, Traffic lights,... on final release?
3) At this stage, you can not put shadows on/off, nor have control over them. Is that correct?
4) enabling 'overwrite kernel settings' doesnt do anything. You still have to work from your separate settings windows. Gues this is stil wip?
5) Stacking materials is not possible. As a workaround you have to use the mix material. I must say, that doesnt do the trick for me. Will stacking be included in final release?
6) c4d's filter shader, is that one going to work in final?
7) opacity channel: A c4d gradient shader reacts strange if you put it in the opacity channel. Just try it...
8) It takes me 32 seconds to render the scene (2 cubes and 3 area ligts) in attachment noise free. In AR it takes me 5 seconds. So I must be doing something wrong here. suggestions anyone?
Thx a lot!
Grtz

first welcome,
1-enable the gpu priority to leave some gpu power to system, otherwise everything will slowdown while rendering
2- Plugin is nearly final and can animate everthing in realtime if you set properly
I think you haven't check the some videos
3- you can't at the moment
4- you're doing something wrong
5- not sure, but next sdk has advanced mapping options for that
6- octane has native textures for that
7- ???
8- 1024 samples is much for outdoor. Also try with much more complex scene with glosiness, dof, etc.. and compare again
Also put a few graphic card and feel the power
Also check the sample scenes to see power

Hi Aoktar,
Thank you for replying!
I will try your solutions but just a few remarks on some of your answers:
2- Plugin is nearly final and can animate everthing in realtime if you set properly

I have checked this now again, to be sure I didn't miss aything, but you only have to set the "update" in the live viewer controls to what you want to update, right? I have set them to update everything auto, but still geometry, traffic light etc, doesnt update real time, I have to 'revoxelize' the live viewer manually to update.
Maybe my GPU card isn't powerfull enough?
4- you're doing something wrong
Any idea what? I just check the "overwrite kernel settings (like explained in videos), that's it. Is there anything else I have to tag on?
6- octane has native textures for that
I'm looking for the desaturation and hue you have in the filter shader, but couldn't find these options in any of the octane shader. I first tought this was in the octane color correction, but can't find it there neither.any suggestion?
7- ???
I wanted to use a gradient as an alpha matte (so in opacity channel). the material, applied on a cube, then gets some transparancy, but if I change the gradient sliders, it doesnt change the material's alpha in the live viewer.
8- 1024 samples is much for outdoor. Also try with much more complex scene with glosiness, dof, etc.. and compare again

I can imagine:
, and truly, From what i've seen on the net, octane blows me away when it comes to speed/quality. But now I compared an architectural scene with vray, and if you want to have a clean, noise free image, render times doesnt seem to differ much. But like you said, I 'll need some new graphic card power, I only have one GTX 580, so I guess some new GTX780 TI's, will bring me some difference (I hope)
cheerz!

everything will update, except geometry. If you want to update you should enable check geometries option and just put a objecttag(nr=1...7) to geometry or top of group. Once you should start a render and next will update on every changes.
octane not yet has a effect as saturation. C4D filter cannot work because they working on cpu side, but our textures on gpu. It can work only use c4d textures by converting to textures. But be sure future of octane will be very different.
c4d gradient(also other c4d shaders) will be converted to textures before start of rendering and will not update until next start. But we have native gradient in coming version. Stay tuned
if you do some fair comparison, set the vray to brute force and give some reflection/refraction with glossiness also dof. Like Octane does.
did you check samples scenes? It has lot of sample to lead

Hi Aoktar,
Thx. I knew the "check geometrie" option, it was on. But the tag I forgot! thx!
About the comparison: Ok, you win
One last question: Is it possible to have a hdr background and a sunlight at the same time? It seems when I create an infinite light and put a light tag on it, my sky object background (wich is a hdri texture) is replaced by a blue background (looks like physical sky or something) in the render. any ideas?

it hasn't yet support daylight+environment texture. But you can do some tricks i think. It depends to your scenes. But daylight + some partial sphere/plane with hdri can work
