Hi everyone :)

I've just been asked to produce a picture of a city in Isometric 3D that would look like Areva's commercials (click here for an example)

Apparently he knows there's a 3D software that would enable me to do this quickly but he couldn't remember the name.
He told me that this software has built-in buildings, which you just have to pick and put into your scene, and you're done !

=> Does anyone know about such a software, or something similar ?
That would help me greatly.

Many thanks,

Madcoo

Did you tryed sketchup? it has a free version, the isometric view and, in the SketchUp’s 3D Warehouse you'll find all the building you need.

Hi Andrea, thank you for your reply.

I couldn't find any software that enables you to do isometric cities very fast, as the client told me. (I think it was a trick to lower the quote more than anything else  )

I use Sketchup on a daily basis, and indeed I think I'll use it for this project.
Otherwise I'll ask a friend of mine to use Illustrator - I found some cheap isometric bulks on the web, with all the buildings I need.

Thanks again, see ya ;)

Pictures like this are drawn, rather than rendered. This is commonly called "pixel art".

If you look closely you will notice that horizontal lines are projected to lines with a slope of slightly less than 30°: the slope corresponds to exactly two pixels sideways for one pixel up. This way you get a clean looking line without using antialiasing.

Hi Roeland,
Yep indeed it's pixel-art but without the pixels ;)
Since I've never had to do pixel-art I only know a few "tricks" to it, but I'm no expert at all
Thanks for the tip about "1 pixel up / 2 pixels sideways", that's a great thing to know!
Cheers,
:D

Hi madcoo, you can setup an isometric camera in Blender. I did it two years ago for a client. I may still have a file somewhere. I will try to find it on my disks. If I remember well, the goal is to find the good focal lengths and camera tilt to get a perspective with and angle of 120° for the axis at 90°.

Hi Roubal,
Many thanks for your reply.
I don't use Blender anymore - I now use 3DSMax.
Anyway don't bother looking for your files, Sketchup is fine for that kind of job.
That was really kind of you.
Many thanks again, read you soon !
