How to improve the image quality?

Fooze if you talk about sampling. I use it often but have no idea what good values are.
I mostly set to 32-512 but I don't have any idea how it really works. Maybe 2 or 4 is already enough or even 512 is to low.

Can you give some additional informations on this samples usage?
