If anyone could spare some knowledge, please do - I need some help breaking the single GPU paradigm.

I have this MOBO of times they had either SLI or Crossfire, not both. And the M4A785TD-V is one of that went crossfire only.

I know Octane does not use SLI and I'm not hoping for it, but I'm concerned:

1. Will the MOBO be able to run 2 nvidia cards independently so I can use both with Octane?
2. Given the attached photo of the system in particular, should I worry about the PSU proximity to 2nd GPU slot? Is the case layout a yellow or red flag?
3. Will the "display card" always be the one where the monitor is plugged in? Or could I somehow have the GTX 780 running games, and the GTX 560ti be the display card when running octane in maya?

Also, I'm tempted towards the 780 instead of the 580 - for games too, true - but also because of temperature-noise. I've read that kepler is much more candid in that front (also there's a good sale and store warranty). Local temperatures can reach 30ºC. Any further considerations are also welcomed.

Yes

No, I have nearly the same situation but I have 2 case cooler.

Yes, from the specification it work.
My mobo use only the first card as display card, so I cant put the cards where I want.
I have my GTX 760 as first card (display) because it is much cooler than my GTX 560Ti.

I assume the 1st card is the one near the CPU and the 2nd the one near the PSU, right? I would have guessed that the one in more need of being cool would be the bottom one because of the clutter. Nice, I'll have an excuse besides games to use the 780 as main card :P And I can always set low priority on octane.
Thank you again, mib.

Just recording:

It worked with no hassle. Now 360% the performance from before.

Code: Select all

GPUs ms/sec max ºC
GTX 560ti 2.78 92
GTX 780 7.28 80
Both 10.06
I worry these summer days. Today it was only 26ºC. Temperatures were indeed measured with closed case.
But mighty thingy this 780. :D Hopefully it has some future proof like the 580.

nice to hear that! on the temperatures though..I would probably power screen only from 560ti, leaving 780 to render on it's own =) this way You'll have less headache =) anyway.. 560 will start messing You life soon with it's 1GB of vRam =)

I have my old 460 dusting somewhere. After I saw..99C - don't want to plug it anymore =DDD I couldn't sleep knowing this card is in my case =p
