This is the recommended thread for downloading, and posting any questions, suggestions or support queries for OctaneRender for Rhino, build 1.20.1.24 onwards (STABLE RELEASE). This version is compiled against Octane 1.20.1, so see the requirements for that build regarding compatibility with your video card.

This version requires Rhino5, SR7 - build 31213 or later. Pls check your Rhino version prior to installing this version of the plugin.

This TEST version is 1.20.1.24 (but updates may be posted in this thread which supersede this release number).

This version complete revamps the material system - so Octane materials are now Rhino materials - editing in the Rhino Material panel. Unfortunately this means your existing Octane materials will be lost when you open your Rhino scenes with this version of the plugin. If you have Octane material that you need to retain, pls export them from the old version of the plugin prior to installing this version of the plugin.

I will update the on-line manual over the next couple of weeks to reflect the changes above.

If you have a support issue, pls provide the following information:
- Operating System (ie. Win XP, Vista, 7, 8)
- 32 or 64 bit
- Amount of RAM
- Graphics Card(s) - model (ie. GTX 580, 3GB)
- Nvidia driver version
- Rhino version and build number
- OctaneRender for Rhino version (ie. 1.20.1.13)

Change Log from release 1.20.1.16
- All new material system. Octane will render Octane and non-Octane materials. Create Octane materials as a Rhino Material type (in the Rhino Material panel). Octane Materials tab removed. Existing scene Octane materials will be lost.
- Maximum scatter transforms increased to 1,000,000, and improved error detection when loading transforms
- Material conversion now maps the glossy -> specular to the Rhino material Reflectivity
- Material conversion now maps glossy -> roughness to the Rhino material Gloss Finish (except if gloss = 0, roughness = 0)
- Default Specular removed from the configuration (not needed - since this is now sources from the Rhino material reflection value)
- Rendering in Octane via the Rhino render viewport no longer overwrites the Octane "resolution" node settings. The render will however still be done to the Rhino render viewport resolution settings
- New configuration option which sets the Rhino render resolution from the Octane render resolution when you render via the Rhino render window
- Added new resolution preset "Rhino Viewport" - NOTE: You will need to delete your C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\OctaneRender for Rhinoceros\resolutions.xml in order for this change to work
- Fixed issue where rendering when alpha channel ON was not saving the alpha channel when rending via the Rhino render window
- Moved the "Reload All Texturemaps" option to the Octane Settings tab rightclick menu
- Fixed issue where changing a node type was not changing the tree icon to the new node type
- Added Setup tree rightclick option to convert all non-Octane materials to Octane materials
- Fixed issue where the Rhino resolution was not being set to the Octane resolution (if the relevant configuration option had been enabled)
- Fixed issue where you could not render to the Rhino renderer via Octane until restarting Rhino after plugin activation
- Stopped the viewport being able to be opened when the plugin has not be activated
- The maximum number of polygons that can be loaded into each mesh item in Octane can now be set in the Configuration.
- Fixed issue where the bottom line of the render was incorrectly saved when saving via the Rhino render panel
- Fixed issue where instance materials were being picked up from the block definition (which was the incorrect material) instead of the instance

LIMITATION - If you turn the Rhino ground plane on - the Octane material for this geometry cannot currently be accessed. I am awaiting info or a bug fix from McNeel to rectify this. In the meantime, pls use a Surface Plane instead of the Rhino Ground Plane.

LIMITATION - Sun studies are not currently picking up the correct sun position. There is a support call in with McNeel on this issue

Known Issue
If you select "Save To File" for an Octane Material in the Rhino Material panel, a "Failed to save to file" error is returned. This is a Rhino issue, and is fixed in Rhino SR8.

Paul,

Is the download link updated? I downloaded the link with no visible changes in the plugin within Rhino (updated to SR7).

When I checked Rhino's plugin manager, the properties indicated Octane's plugin ended in ".22", rather than ".24".

I did not delete the old Octane/Rhino plugin, before installing--maybe this is the cause?

Thank you in advance for any assistance!

There was a problem with the build I originally uploaded. Can you pls re-download from the links above - it should now install 1.20.1.24.

Hi Paul,
Did you checked 32bit version?
When I installed it for the very first time with Rhino sr7 5.7.31113.14095 it tried to authenticate the credentials and then gave following error.

OctaneRenderForRhino.php
Unable to load OctaneRenderForRhino.rhp plugin: application initialization failed.

Btw, I didn't any issue installing 64bit version. Its running smoothly.

Thanks.
Jitendra.

Thanks for the update, Paul. I now have it working.

I do have another question however: When I right click and "change type"/convert to an Octane material, I lose my jpeg texture within the rhino shaded viewport (even though my Octane material contains a jpeg). Is there a workaround to have the jpeg texture viewable in both the rhino and octane viewports (for texture mapping revisions as needed)? (The octane material jpeg is underneath a multiply node.)

Thank you,
Nathan

Hi Nathan

As this is the first version of the new materials system, I've tried to keep it as robust and simple as possible. So the conversion of an Octane material back to a Rhino material for displaying on the Rhino viewport is very simple, and having an "image" embedded under other nodes will result in it not being picked up. But this could be changed. I'd be interested to hear from people if any texturemap, regardless of how it is used, under the diffuse pin should be used for the Rhino diffuse map or not (could lead to some odd results, since the Octane node system might actually invert the image, but this woul not be picked up). Also, only the FIRST texturemap found would be used (ie. if 2 "image" nodes where in a "mix", only the first would be displayed in the Rhino viewport.

Hi Paul,

Having octane pick up the first jpeg would be excellent for my needs. (Anything to visually assist w/ simple texture mapping revisions in Rhino's shaded viewport would be greatly appreciated.)

Thank you!
Nathan
