sorry, i forgot that your 680 is a mac card, so you don't need another mac card and you can put inside any pc gtx explicitely for octane.
the titan is not so hungry of energy like my 590, so you could put a secondary dedicated psu in one of the dvd slots for a more clean and neat solution.

Yep that is essentially what my setup is - but you have the benefit of a boot screen with you mac edition 680 (keep this feeding your screen) and let the titan do all the grunt. The only "wizardry" you have to do with the external psu for the titan is connect 2 pins on the motherboard power cable "tricking" the psu to think it's connected to a computer that is turned on therefore feed power to other connectors (this is a cable that would normally go from the psu to the main motherboard, as we are using the psu externally and only to feed a pfx card you need to do this)- It's easier for me to post some pictures. You can actually use both cards for gpu rendering at the same time, but will be limited to the 680's memory, or just use the 680 for the GUI and titan for gpu rendering to gain the full 6gb and speedy gui.eyelovemotion wrote:thank you for yours answers..
to clarify that: now- i have one EVGA gtx 680 mac edition in my mac pro ( Alu Tower / 2010, 12 Core)
I use the latest Nvidia Driver under OS X 10.8.4
Can i now buy one Titan Card, plug that in ( with an external psu)?
This card then also uses the OS X Drivers i have installed?
thanks for your answers in advance..
I'll post pictures later on

man, thank you! so much effort..
one last question: for octane live render i should only set the switch to the titan then, right?
when i would set both to render, my gtx 680 ( 2GB) und the titan ( 6GB) it would only use the vram of the
smaller card, right?

That's right - the memory is limited by the lowest denominator so in your case 2GB - it will also slow down the GUI if you use both - but for small/less heavy scenes using both is okeyelovemotion wrote:it would only use the vram of the

ok.. what if: i use the titan for rendering in c4d only... so just GPU rendering on that card.
then i should have full ram / cpupower (12 pcs) for working in after effects, right?

I would use the cards where and when you need them - I'm sure After Effects would enjoy a go on the titan now and again
The 2gb 680 sounds best kept for gui/monitor and smaller gpu tasks - leaving the titan free to grunt. I don't use A/E but have read it benefits from GPU also - so just using A/E on your CPU is fine but I would look at sharing the love around.

hey stu. i hav the same psu like you now. tomorrow my titan will arrive. i understood much of your photos/ drawings.
but am i right, that i have to shortcut pins 3&4 in the top row seen from left in your picure? or is it the 4&5 pin? can you please
give me help on that? i tried it with a paper clip on 3&4, then powered on the v1000. but it doenst go up.
or does there have to be a card or something thats using / needing power attached to the psu first? so that the psu recognizes it has to spend power?
and later- when that works: if i want to switch of my mac i would have to switch off mac, wait until it is down and then switch of the v1000?
and the other way around when i power up my mac?
what would happen if i power on my mac and forget to power on the external psu for the titan. or just power on the psu later / too late
when os has already booted?
so many questions again from germany.
regards, carsten

Hi - Attached is a photo of where to put the bent paper clip. I use the ex-psu to power the titan only.
I always make sure the psu is on before the mac, and turned off after the mac, really not sure what would happen if you forget - probably the mac would shut down if the power drain is too much to handle.
Hope this helps
